Premier Nguyen Van Loc told the National Assembly that Viet Cong offensives failed to capture any Saigon towns. He defended his month in office amid rumors of possible replacement and said the cabinet is ready to reshuffle if needed.
In Paris, the United States directly accused North Vietnam of moving substantial and increasing numbers of troops and supplies into the South. Ambassador Harriman offered to withdraw U.S. forces if North Vietnam pulls its troops and violence decreases.
Conservative Leader Stanfield defended cross provincial foreign contacts and said Quebec and other provinces may arrange international ties within limits. He unveiled a stronger Atlantic Development Board and a comprehensive strategy to meet regional needs, to be published within 12 months, during a Fredericton and St John’s tour as Trudeau counters with a new regional ministry proposal.
Edmonton Alberta Municipal Affairs Minister Edgar Gerhart was appointed Attorney General succeeding Premier Manning who held the post since 1955. Gerhart 44, a pharmacist and Social Credit MLA for Edmonton Northwest, was sworn in by Lt Governor MacEwan after taking over municipal affairs last June. He has five children with Margaret Frieda Tiffin, born in Drumheller.
The pound fell to 2.38825 dollars in U.S. funds the lowest since the November devaluation. The slide began after Cecil King, a Bank of England director and newspaper tycoon, warned of Britain’s worst financial crisis and attacked Prime Minister Wilson before resigning from the bank.
U S Command reports the main Viet Cong thrust on Saigon crushed while a U S Special Forces camp at Kham Duc 350 miles northeast fell to North Vietnamese attack. Evacuations by air left six air force crew dead after a C 130 transport was shot down with civilian irregulars and South Vietnamese soldiers aboard.
The Poor People's Campaign officially launches with a Mother's Day march through a Negro slum in Washington. About 2000 to 3500 marchers, led by Mrs. Coretta King, converge on the capital as 3000 demonstrators prepare to occupy a park site near the Lincoln Memorial for Resurrection City. The event follows post King's assassination violence and looting, with police reporting no incidents.
Prime Minister Trudeau and UN Secretary General U Thant meet in Edmonton ahead of Paris talks to consider Canada joining Vietnam peacekeeping. They discuss possible UN role parameters while Canada weighs terms of any commitment.

The Canadian Press reports at least 73 people died in Canada over the weekend with 58 killed in traffic crashes including an eight-death two car collision in Manitoba. In Lebanon a clash between Lebanese and Israeli forces led to a mortar exchange and a Lebanese woman was killed.
