Canadians mark King George VI coronation with nationwide ceremonies from Halifax to Vancouver Island. Sailors, soldiers, Boy Scouts and schoolchildren join public services and beacon fires as Parliament Hill hosts a royal salute, march pasts, and the King's first radio address.

George VI was crowned and consecrated King of England and the British Commonwealth at Westminster Abbey. Cosmo Gordon Lang, 97th Archbishop of Canterbury, placed St Edward's Crown on the monarch as thousands cheered outside. The royal procession back to Buckingham Palace was met with rain and roaring crowds across London and Empire.
Archibald Galbraith, 76, of Swift Current Saskatchewan, testified in Vancouver before Judge Harger about an elderly fraud involving stock profits. He paid $8300 to an affable stranger, as part of a five year old charge against David Lohn.
The air recital of Great Britain's coronation drew vast listenership with a conservative estimate of hundreds of millions worldwide. North America alone was pegged at about 85 million listeners as trans Atlantic reception met near ideal conditions and clearly carried Westminster Abbey ceremonies and processions.
Across Ottawa and Calgary, coronation births are reported. In Ottawa a boy and a girl born to Allan C McGuine, with cups and gifts from the city. in Calgary a twin boy and girl born to Chris Jensen near a Calgary suburb. In Medicine Hat a son and a daughter are listed for Hamnett family.
French Surete Nationale disclosed a plot to attack royalty and ministers as they travel Paris to London for a coronation. They arrested Stephan Marusic chief of a Balkan revolutionary group linked to the 1934 assassination of King Alexander of Yugoslavia. A second suspect was seized and nine bombs were found in his rooms.
At 8 this morning about 150 citizens joined in planting elm and maple trees along the King's highway from St Patrick's Church to Division Ave. The ceremony at Hargrave Park featured William Cousins planting the first tree in honor of the city’s old-timers, followed by 156 saplings installed by local groups, and a dedication by Rev J A Claxton. Cousins recalled his first river drink 54 years ago and praised James Hargrave as a model of honesty and service. The gate walls use prairie stone, symbolizing pioneer values for future generations including the Hargrave family’s early western ventures and ranching history.
About 125 members of the United Wards Club of London England including the Lord Mayor Aldermen Sheriffs and council members will visit Canada this summer arriving in Montreal September 1 The group chose Canada as the Dominion visit this year to attend the coronation celebrations and meet leading Canadian business and professional figures.
Fog shrouded the city as crowds gathered for the Coronation day pageant for King and Queen. Tens of thousands filled avenues from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, with estimates of massive attendance and police efforts to manage traffic.
About 50 000 people fill Parliament Hill as Lord Tweedsmuir Governor General and acting Prime Minister Raoul Dandurand lead coronation observances. The crowd gathers at the Peace Tower with foreign representatives to reinforce ties between Canada and Britain. Dandurand emphasizes equal status of dominion legislatures and continued loyalty to the crown.
Vancouver May 12 A total of 185 candidates filed for 48 seats in the British Columbia legislature as official nominations closed. Liberals named a full slate of 48 while the Constructives, Federations and others filled remaining races. Premier Pattullo faces CCF Conservatives and Social Credit opposition in a field including 18 candidates for four seats in Vancouver East and many multi-candidate contests across the province.
A preview of Coronation Day events at the Arena features a pageant by Boy Scouts Rovers Cubs and Guides with colorfully attired groups. Melody Maids perform alongside folk dances and a Canadian Square Dance as the audience participates. Doors open 6:45 PM with show starting at 8:30 PM.
Neaiu observes the succession of King George with Coronation Day activities. The 600 residents and nearby farmers decorate streets and prepare a royal message to the new King. Postmaster Ellis plans mass stamp cancellations as part of the commemorations.
