Ottawa May 12 Finance Minister Fielding presented his seventeenth budget in a packed chamber. He opened at 3:25 PM by moving to go into committee on ways and means and reviewed financial figures since the current government took office.
Ottawa announces not to add new taxes while pursuing tariff relief and tax source changes. Major points include reductions in excise, a six percent sales tax at source on imports and home goods, tax cuts on cheques, wines, and cigarettes, and a new tariff structure favoring artificial silk and certain exports. The government cites a 1921-22 deficit and rising debt, but expects a 1922-23 ordinary surplus of $61.8 million with overall debt increase around $49.3 million.
In police court Henry Match was convicted of vagrancy and sentenced to one month in jail at herd favor. The evidence showed he had not been working and hid no visible means of support.
Montreal May 11 The annual convention of the Union of Canadian Municipalities will be held August 30 31 and September 1 at Shawinigan Falls. Announcement made at the secretary's office.
Dublin May 12 Kevin O Higgs secretary of home affairs told reporters he would deliver to the British Art O'Brien and others deported from England to Ireland when demanded. He said the prisoners were obtained under the agreement and must comply with habeas corpus writs. A writ of habeas corpus was recently obtained in England for O Brien.
In Toronto on May 12 the jury found for Mariette Van Hooree against Walter Woods McKeewn on all counts in a breach of promise suit and awarded $4800 in heart balm. Counsel said the case would be appealed.
Enterprise Oil Co. of this city readies a drifting rig for Many Island Lake field. President W H Wetmen notes geologist C Coulter of Denver has surveyed leases and reported an opening in a closed structure favorable for gushers. Directors urge shareholder support for the Community well and funding to finish the project.

Moscow May 12 The Soviet government says it does not desire a break with Great Britain and is willing to confer but cannot accept the ultimatum in Lord Curzon’s note. Deputy Foreign Minister M Genetski said in a recorded interview. Leonid Krassin, foreign trade commissioner, will depart for England. British ultimatum expires May 1. Krassin’s London trip aims to straighten affairs if possible, though it may signal readiness to sever relations if needed.
Sidney report says Silby and Tom Barrett former United Mine Workers officials visited the Maritime Labor Herald office in Glace Bay after a clash that drove staff into the street. Warrants reportedly planned for the Barrett brothers. Also notes eight hundred immigrants from Britain and Europe reaching Winnipeg and heading west.
