Two veteran netminders face off in Edmonton at the Coliseum as Dave Dryden of the Oilers and Gary Smith of the Jets battle for the opener. Dryden has 17 pro seasons and Smith has played for twelve clubs, including the Maple Leafs when they won the Cup in 1967.
The CFL executive unanimously moved the interlocking schedule between Eastern and Western teams to the Grey Cup meeting on November 25. Commissioner Jake Gaudaur said early adoption could be 1981 while negotiations consider rivalry impacts. Gaudaur’s five year extension runs through 1985. The 1980 Grey Cup is set for November 23 in Toronto and Montreal hosts this year’s final on November 25 pending Olympic Stadium roof decision.
Tom Watson trailed by one par on the Byron Nelson course as rain stopped the first round with 39 players remaining on Preston Trail. Larry Nelson led at five under 65 while George Burns and others were in the 66 67 range and Arnold Palmer among 68s.
Indianapolis AP report details Dick King resigning as USAC president amid a bitter split with CART. King alleges a criminal-conviction report about his past was leaked to pressure him. Colleague Joe Cloutier expects him to stay on. King recalls a 1957 Niagara Falls auto loan irregularity and nine months in jail.
Edmonton Eskimos announce four new Canadian contract signings for the CFL season. Rene Deschamps from Quebec City and University of Calgary becomes a defensive guard at 6-1 234. Bob Hogan from Windsor and Virginia adds defensive back at 6-0 180. David Roberts from Queen's University joins as linebacker at 6-2 210. Marco Cyncar from Alberta Golden Bears signs as wide receiver and versatile back at 6-0 175.
