Citizens picketed City Hall voicing anger over lost playing space as Slo gang banners urged more land. City Council held a meeting after ejecting youths from the street and facing cries for a heart for local ball games.
Dr. K R Thornton and pharmacist Chuck Meagher report that thalidomide was not stored or used at Medicine Hat General Hospital. They found no deformities linked to the drug locally, noting any use was minimal and the product was destroyed after early reports of harm.
Alberta health officials linked thalidomide to deformities in three Edmonton babies and noted underreporting of such cases. Calgary had three similar instances earlier. Mothers used the drug as a sedative in early pregnancy. a medical bulletin was issued to doctors warning of the drug and its dangers.
The United States fired its eighth atmospheric nuclear test in the Pacific series. The device was air dropped, with officials from the Atomic Energy Commission and the Defense Department announcing the detonation occurred at about 11:45 a.m. EDT.
Dr. James D. Ebert of the Carnegie Institution warns that so called wonder drugs may cause congenital defects in newborns. He urges tighter federal and industry controls and better testing on pregnancy safety, noting reports from West Germany and Britain A major defect cited is seal limbs.

RCMP ordered an inquest into the death of Murray Blake Leask of Medicine Hat who died Tuesday night when his car struck the rear of a heavy truck near Cluny, 65 miles east of Calgary. Passenger Aruchuk also of Medicine Hat sustained severe internal injuries and remained hospitalized. Leask’s vehicle allegedly ran underneath the trailer. the car was demolished and rescuers used cutting torches to free him.
Eric Lifton 22 a New Hampshire student was found guilty of capital murder for a Feb 9 double shooting at the Bay shore Inn Vancouver He was sentenced to be hanged July 31 Lifton testified he used a stolen airline credit card for trips to Hawaii Montreal and across the United States and to Vancouver Detected detective Larry Short was killed along with Larry Kingston on the charges Lifton faces additional murder counts and a clemency recommendation was noted by the judge in the report to the justice department
Nelson British Columbia evacutions report 104 Freedomites jailed for terrorism this year with 192 arrested since November 3. Nine Freedomites convicted of bombing a power pylon in the East Kootenays and given 15 year terms plus concurrent 15 year sentences. Members of the ruling fraternal council face 70 charges for trying to intimidate British Columbia legislature and Canadian Parliament.
At a Geneva conference the U S delegate Arthur Dean says the East West balance must be preserved as disarmament progresses. He rejects miraculous fixes and calls for phased stages with three years for the first two and no firm limit for the final stage, while Russia seeks four years for total disarmament.
