Moscow officials announce a 50 per cent price hike across food liquor and most essentials as part of deflation plans. Government controls rationing and adds high priced night clubs offering pricey meals and drinks as inflation adjustments unfold. Authorities say no more currency issuance in 1931 and aim for eventual stabilization.
London report says Rt Hon Wedgewood Benn announced in Parliament that over 1,000 rebels were killed and about 2,000 captured in Burma operations. Rebels killed around 100 village headmen. Troops posted in affected areas and another infantry battalion summoned from India as insurgent actions continue.
Paris May 11 Briand announced his candidacy for the Presidency after addressing about thirty left Republican representatives who urged him to stand as their nominee amid the provincial election set for Wednesday. The day was fair and warm with a 64 42 temperature.
A motor bus crashed through a parapet at Saint Jarez Saint Etienne and fell 30 feet into a ravine. The bus overturned and burned trapping four people who died. Twenty passengers were badly hurt but escaped. Cause of the accident is not determined.
Winnipeg police say no suspect is in custody in the death of Major P. B. R. Tucker the bank manager shot by three robbers who fled with 7000. Detectives pursue a slim foreigner believed to lead the trio as authorities hunt their stolen sedan and monitor routes to the United States. Arrangements are made to build six new cotton textile mills in Ahmedabad, India.
The Dominion of Canada offers holders of War Loan and Victory Bonds the chance to convert into 1931 Conversion Loan bonds extending 18 to 25 years. No new money or tax gains are involved as old bonds are exchanged for new government bonds with adjusted coupons and continued tax status.
In Madrid on May 11 mobs attacked Catholic institutions burning the Carmelites monastery and Jesuit headquarters. The Republican Government declared martial law and sent regular army units into the streets while the stock exchange closed and police patrolled amid ongoing violence.
In St. Esprit Quebec the 29 year old stone parish church of St. Esprit burned despite earlier guarded warnings after an anonymous English phone call warned of trouble on a Saturday night. Firefighters from nearby towns aided by locals contained the blaze. the Sacred Host was not saved. The cause is under investigation and insurance covered only 65 000 of 200 000 dollars.
King Prajadhipok of Siam rested after a successful eye operation at Ophir yesterday. He was conscious throughout the procedure, which used only local anesthesia. The king, who traveled from Siam for treatment, asked that his subjects be informed of the outcome. The story also notes a new fruit from Mexico called Peachmond, a hybrid of peach and almond.

Thomas Andrews aged 64 former manager of the Penticton branch of the Canadian Bank of Commerce died in Vancouver on Sunday. Born in England he came to Canada at fourteen and lived in Montreal before joining the North West Mounted Police. He later worked for Cowdrey Brothers at Macleod Alberta.
Two reports from Amherst and River Mabert detail a mine blast at the Victoria Coal Company Bright Light mine in Maccan near Amherst. Early estimates say twenty men were inside. later reports confirm five killed and eight to ten injured at No 2 Victoria mine with most workers accounted for.
Two army aviators Colonel Be Wath and Adjutant Duclos were killed when their planes adrifted at five hundred feet near Villa Coublay France. The crash occurred during a routine flight and is attributed to undetermined causes by officials.
Report states stewardesses will accompany flights on a proposed London route with forty passenger planes. Passengers would be carried if the service operates next summer according to the plan.
Berlin reports a tense weekend as Communists clashed with fascists in Limbach near Chemnitz with mistaken fire killing one and wounding another. At Jena a gunman shot philosopher Hans Gunther near his home, bullets hitting his arm. Police later found a Spanish made weapon. Further fights occurred in Schwaten bach Hornberg and Oldenburg.
Ottawa reports indicate the budget may not be presented before May 28 or the next Thursday. The conversion loan for Victory bonds begins Monday and runs to May 28, offering reduced interest but not affecting next year’s expenditure. A tariff advisory board debate and potential powers for handling trade questions are anticipated in Parliament.
