Alberta Premier Ralph Klein broke three ribs in a Tuesday hot tub incident and was hospitalized after delayed diagnosis. He will remain in hospital part of the weekend and miss work for at least a week, with Treasurer Stockwell Day serving in his absence during recovery.
Ovide Mercredi reverses a planned exit and seeks a third term as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. A Southam News-CTV-Angus Reid poll suggests the Liberal party could win a majority in Ontario, with 52 percent of decided voters backing the Grits if an election were held tomorrow.
Col. Peter Kenward has been found guilty of harassing two soldiers at CFB Suffield over their weight and is ordered to attend a one day sensitivity training. He remains base commander while Maj. Gen. Bruce Jeffries warns the army will not tolerate insensitivity and notes Kenward’s prior notoriety with the disbanded Canadian Airborne Regiment and the Somalia scandal.
Canada faces rising unemployment near 9.6 percent in April with 1.5 million jobless. Statistics Canada reports 33,000 more jobs last month but 79,000 more workers entering the labor force, keeping the rate up while 752,000 new jobs have appeared since 1993. Analysts warned the surge falls short of needed absorption.
In Cambridge Massachusetts an overdue history book titled A Complete History of England by Bishop White Kennett was returned to Harvard University via a book seller. The 1706 work was borrowed long ago and no overdue fines were charged.
Dillon Guckert, an 18 year old with Down syndrome and diabetes, suffers kidney failure leading his family in Medicine Hat to choose a living donor transplant from father Elliott after weighing dialysis. The burden includes medical costs, missed work, and fundraising while Dillon remains unable to swim and attends school, with support from teacher Indito Cruickshank and community efforts.
