U S planes shot down seven MiGs in the deepest air strikes inside North Vietnam in over four years, targeting Hanoi Haiphong and a northwest rail line to China. Hanoi claimed 14 U S planes shot down with many pilots captured while U S command reported no losses.
Two miners Tom Wilkinson and Ron Flory pried from a mile down in the Sunshine mine after a week of peril. They survived by eating from lunch pails of dead men and walked out dazed to cheers and hospital care as rescuers pressed on amid many deaths and missing workers.
Premier Peter Lougheed confirms Medicine Hat General Hospital's air conditioning request is being reconsidered as an exceptional case. Alberta Hospital Services Commission previously denied a 375000 installation, while local officials urge heightened action and community input to push the matter forward.
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird said Soviet vessels appear to be changing course after President Nixon ordered North Vietnam harbors mined. He noted no evidence of mine clearance, affirmed continued US mining and blockade stance, and said 36 ships in Haiphong include 16 Soviets. Moscow had not responded officially.
Senator George McGovern captured Nebraska defeating Hubert Humphrey by a solid margin as 89 percent of votes counted show a 41 to 35 percent lead. McGovern, 49, long an antiwar voice, strengthened his position in the primary in the conservative heartland.
City council approved minor renovations and a new roof structure for City Hall. A committee will select exterior materials and study long range plans, with a total project cap of 60000 dollars plus other necessary repairs. Committee members include Aldermen George Davison Lucille Moyer Tom Sissons Milt Reinhardt and Pete Simpson.
Alberta government introduces amendments to the mines and minerals act removing maximum royalty limits on new Crown leases and renewals. The bill seeks more exploratory drilling while noting existing royalties on 1973 leases remain.
In Ottawa the prime minister said Canada will not rush a condemnation of President Nixon’s Southeast Asia escalation. He noted no decision yet on issuing a statement and suggested any remark would condemn both sides. Trudeau cited North Vietnam’s 12 divisions as a parallel.
Private David Cowling 21 was rescued after a 51 ton Chieftain tank plunged 60 feet into Vancouver harbor from the stern of the Sir Bedivere. Longshore foreman Ken Lambrand dived in to save him as a harbor tug pulled them from the water. Salvage crews raced to recover the $250,000 tank within 24 hours.
