A Shire stallion of 10 years is up for cash sale by the undersigned. The horse can be viewed at A. MecCloy’s livery barns in Medicine Hat, with C. Milner responsible for the sale.
Smaldeel May 6 report describes Roberts strategic advance from Winburg to Smaldeel with five British to one Boer. Hamilton and Hutton gains modified Boer positions, artillery and rail barriers disrupted, and Maxwell to cross Vet River. Dispatch notes possible rest at Smaldeel and French cavalry movements near Kronstadt or Ladybrand.
Strikes grow as Montana Central and Great Northern refuse wage concessions. New ten hour days and starvation pay trigger protests. many fired and not rehired. Freight blocked at Great Falls and Helena, with passenger trains hauling limited freight. A wreck near Great Falls halts service for six hours. Strikers deny involvement. allied lines give no support.
Two C P R work trains began operations from Pilot Buttes this week with Conductors A Prosser and Fred Brewer in charge. Brakewen Trick Marlatt Irvin and Graham accompany them while Engineers Dele bridge Grace and firemen Hannah Alunter operate the throttle. Abbey and Johnson supervise the shovel crew. CPR lake boats now run between Owen Sound and Fort William with upper lake steamships leaving Owen Sound at 1 30 p m on Tue Thu Sat and returning from Fort William at 4 a m and Port Arthur at 10 a m on Fri Sun Tue.
Constable G H Hughes left for Regina on Wednesday the 2nd inst to hand over a prisoner to be escorted to Stoney Mountain. Five new police recruits arrived from Regina to ease short staffing due to South Africa drafts. A sad death occurred at Crane Lake on 28 April as three year old Ernest Dimmock died after convulsions before medical aid arrived. Public School picnic planned for 24 May at Greeley's Grove with sports and a cricket match Town vs Country, plus an evening local talent entertainment. R T V social featured progressive crockinole, conundrum menus, and a novel supper format. All left members pleased with the evening.
Stockmen in northern Montana plan cattle dipping to stamp out mange and a parasitic scab outbreak. Dipping pens will mirror sheep procedures with animal sized adaptations and will be erected along ranges where affected animals are found. Prompt dipping is said to cure the disease and reduce long term losses, despite notable expense. River Press reports.

The Denver Times Sun notes Andy Carayan rose from dishwashing in Casper to a $100000 fortune after building multiple flocks of sheep and selling his business for 50000. He expanded by buying wool clips and managing several flocks with $350000 in bank deposits. Great Falls Tribune reports James Burns sold 14 Montana fed steers to Great Falls Meat Co for about 72 each, averaging 1598 pounds at 44 cents per pound, a record Montana price.
Premier Haultain announced dissatisfaction with liquor law administration and proposed a new system in collaboration with the N W M P. He said reform would follow after wartime forces are reorganized. A note warns not to overtook bargains at the Stone Store on Friday.
Reports from Smaldeel May 8 describe Gen Hutton's mounted infantry and Canadian units attempting to cut a Boer convoy leaving Sand River. Boers fire with ten guns, enfilade Australian positions, and reinforcements threaten to cut off the column. Hutton orders retirement. Boers shell but do not press. The convoy then retreats north as Boers blow up culverts. London also notes stores accumulating and convoys moving north and to Winberg.
A M Wright of Malita Mal opened a jewellery store in town using half of Douglas' Bookstore. Jas Cook bought the Dannison property at the corner of Toronto Street and Third Avenue. The Pressed Brick Co expects daily word on a test results sent East weeks ago.
