Parrot Granted Bail In Defiance Of Back To Work Order

Ontario court granted bail of 250 dollars with no deposit to Jean Claude Parrot leader of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers pending appeal of a three month jail term for defying Parliament's back to work order last fall. A court spokesman said Parrot would be released once the bail order reached detention officials and likely out by late afternoon. The union leader called the act a benign crime and criticized government actions as a deliberate example against labor. Burk cited cabinet ministers and RCMP misconduct as examples of unpunished offences while democracy could be at stake. The CUPW said lawyers reviewed the act before deciding to stay off the job and Parrot's sentencing was expected to energize union efforts with management disputes ongoing.
