Elroy Herter Ross Walker and Jim Leach led the competition at the Wednesday high school track and field meet in Medicine Hat. Herter and Walker won senior division titles while Leach dominated the middle group with decisive wins.
City council imposed a by law restricting water use three weeks early at a Wednesday night meeting. The rules switch on even and odd calendar dates and limit lawn sprinkling to specific hours and permit windows.
In Leaside a burglary suspect was severely wounded and four officers injured as about 100 police closed in on two men in a Bayview Avenue office building. One suspect was shot during a parking-lot escape, the other captured after a five-mile pursuit. Gordon Smith, 32, charged with breaking and entering and shooting with intent.
Montreal report states final accounting shows 3.35 million dollars stolen from Brockville Trust and Savings Co. last weekend. Of that, 1.1 million in bearer bonds recovered in Montreal after Rene Martin’s arrest. 2.25 million in bearer bonds stolen with 500 thousand recovered. Registered bonds worth 1.1 million stolen, 600 thousand recovered. Police question suspects, including another man and a woman handed to provincial police. The insurer covers the loss. cash amount not disclosed and earlier estimates fluctuated toward ten million.
United States millionaire Stanley I Schonbrun 36 of Massapequa Park New York surrendered in Toronto on charges of theft and fraud involving 960000 from Briland Mines. He is the third arrest in a year long Briland Mines probe alongside Benjamin Smith 44 and Charles Stuart 31 both charged with theft fraud and conspiracy in the same 960000 case.
London Reuters reports Britain’s unemployment rose to 2 percent in April with 440000 people registered as unemployed. 408000 were wholly unemployed while the remainder were temporarily out of work, marking the highest level in five years.

Edmonton resident Mrs. Bill Tkatchuk received a letter from her sister sent in September 1939. Postal officials recovered it from a mail car crack slated for demolition and traced it back to Bellas Saskatchewan where Mrs. J Olnyuk posted it 19 years ago. It finally reached Mrs Tkatchuk in Ora Sask.
A Wednesday night meeting in council chambers between Medicine Hat city council and Britalta Corporation failed to produce definite conclusions. The 90 minute session continued years of negotiations over city purchase of a 54 section buffer zone west of Britalta holdings with gas reserves and export permits discussed. Unofficial word says Britalta seeks 12 to 14 million dollars for the leases as the city weighs options.
Edmonton CP reports Alberta Liquor Control Board chair George Clash announced a group of five or six new liquor outlets will open simultaneously in Calgary and Edmonton, likely early 1959. The multi site rollout replaces single openings and follows a successful Calgary Edmonton mixed drinking resumption. Rural points will not follow the group system. More than 200 licence inquiries have been received with forms to all applicants.
