A heavy battle persists at Verdun with German forces shelling and gasping French troops from the slope of Hill 340. The attempt to seize the position reportedly failed, leaving the area contested and under bombardment.
Dispatches report Verdun fighting with Hill 304 a focal point where German positions lie at the foot of the slope and French troops hold the summit. French artillery blocked German advances and protected trench lines as continued bombardment and assaults occur around Verdun.
The report states that two German commerce raiders and submarines in mid sea on May 1 were denied today by Captain Bonifacio. He reported to the Faber Hine office and Captain Gaunt, British naval attaché.
The steamship Cymrie is sinking after departing New York for Liverpool on April 20. The Cymric has been in British government service with no passengers aboard on its last voyage.
In a May House action the Senate amendment proposing a standing army of 250,000 men was rejected by 221 to 142. The House last proposed a 140,000 man force.

Winnipeg experienced a severe 60 mph windstorm with a man named Steele struck by a safety sale and left unconscious at General Hospital.
Winnipeg market reports show May wheat values for No 1 and No 2 at 117 3-4 and 115 1-4, with other grades listed. Oats and barley prices appear for May and July, alongside July and October closings and Canadian flax data. Chicago and Minneapolis grain quotes are cited for May and July wheat and related grades.

London May 7 Countess Georgina Markievicz one of the rebels in the Irish uprising was sentenced by court martial to death but commuted to penal servitude for life. Henry O Hanrahan also commuted to life. George Plunkett and John Plunkett received ten years penal servitude. Other rebels faces commutations to three years or five years imprisonment.
Winnipeg May 8 The royal commission will investigate all matters pertaining to the construction of the Manitoba Agricultural College. Attorney General A B Hudson announced the inquiry will cover details surrounding the project.
The City ball league starts at 1 30 in the afternoon weather permitting. The Elks and Libérats clash in a road contest with many new players on duty. Three bands will play for the parade to mark the opening.
