A group of Mennonites with Mexican and Canadian citizenship formed a major marijuana smuggling pipeline between Canada and the United States. Heinrich Redekopp 40 and Peter Bartsch 54 of Cottam Ontario and Peter Penner 29 of Leamington Ontario received concurrent seven year sentences for conspiracy to import a narcotic and five years for possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking. All three were born in Mexico and hold dual citizenships.
Ontario's government unveiled a no surprise budget focusing on jobs and health care. Premier Mike Harris announced phase two of a three year, 30 percent cut to provincial income tax rates aimed at speeding up job growth, with the full reduction to 22.5 percent by January.
