The Bank of Canada reduced its rate to 8.17 percent from 8.33 percent. The move ends a streak of five consecutive weekly increases and comes during a period of tighter credit conditions.
Waldheim will sue Edgar Bronfman president of the World Jewish Congress for slander. Bronfman told a Budapest news conference he believes Waldheim was part of the Nazi killing machine while Waldheim denies any role in Nazi death camps.
Prime Minister Brian Mulroney's three day Prairie swing yielded a cool crowd in Lethbridge as Conservatives folded arms during his speech. He pledged a Senate reform package by 1988 while western voters face economic strain andMeech Lake accord was cited as support. The Medicine Hat Tigers beat the Portland Winter Hawks 7 2 to win the WHL title and advance to the Memorial Cup in Oshawa.
Alberta plans three year fixed rate savings bonds for residents only. Available May 19 for two weeks with a May 15 rate announcement. Funds used for university hospital and nursing home building projects. Bonds in $100 increments up to $50 000 per person. Matures June 1 1990 and redeemable semi annually. Sales end June 3 1987.
Right wing Conservatives celebrate gains in white parliamentary elections promising stricter segregation and housing controls. The National party expands its majority at the expense of the Progressive Federal party while leaders warn of a reform debate split along pro and anti reform lines. Clive Derby-Lewis claims the National party is in its death throes. Frederik de Klerk expresses disappointment in Conservative gains but relief at Progressive setbacks.
Finance Minister Michael Wilson outlined a June 18 release detailing a three-bracket tax system and three options for reform including a combined federal provincial sales tax. He stressed a fairer simpler system with less reliance on income taxes and steadier revenues while cabinet debate and election timing cloud final adoption.
