An asbestos mining town struggles after Thursday clashes that brought in provincial police and read the riot act. About 53 arrested in Montreal and Sherbrooke custody. Strike began Feb 13 with 5000 miners demanding 15 cents more per hour amid ongoing picket lines and blocked roads.
Many strikers arrested Friday must face court on various charges from vagrancy to unlawful assembly. Nineteen who appeared in Sherbrooke were fined 15 dollars and costs for vagrancy. Twenty eight others, unable to raise 300 dollars cash bail, are held in Sher.
Chinese Communist troops attacked Shanghai area defenses in two waves totaling about 15,000 fighters from two sectors 30 miles West and 35 miles Northwest of Shanghai. Defenders reported heavy losses for the Reds and slight progress near Kashing 50 miles southwest. Red forces pressed south along a 300 mile front toward Nanchang as siege rumors surround Hankow Canton rail approaches.
Bonn reports Western Germany completed nearly all steps to adopt a new constitution with final formalities set for tomorrow. An interim government will lead until July as authorities push to lift the Berlin blockades under the New York agreement. Russia and Western allies race to resolve transport and rail issues amid possible strikes. A separate Anglo American radio counter offensive against Russian jamming began with 61 transmitters and will continue.
Report notes movement of Communists about 35 miles south of Hanchow and 100 miles southwest of Shanghai with apparent southward trajectory.
Henry G. Birks of Montreal told Washington that Canada remains the United States’ best customer as US dollar spending on Marshall plan goods declines. He noted Canada’s currency needs, Britain’s shift to sterling trade, and proposed an Anglo Canadian American fact finding team to address currency and trade tensions.
Canada told the United Nations that Israel should be admitted now to UN membership. R G Riddell said Israel would safeguard holy places in Jerusalem and fulfill obligations under the charter. The move drew support from seven countries while Arab bloc allies urged a fall vote.

Announcement: the annual general meeting of the Western Canada Reclamation Association will be held in Lethbridge on Friday September 23 in conjunction with Irrigation Day. Arthur P. Burns of Lethbridge, president of W C R A, issued the call.
A three member city commission may govern Medicine Hat if ratepayers approve the by-law on May 30. The proposed commissioners are Mayor, Hector Lang, City Comptroller Alfred Thomas Legge, and City Engineer James Leslie Carswell. The plan keeps salaries unchanged and shifts executive control from department heads to the commission, subject to council oversight and possible later amendments.
Vancouver airman Bill Grant 30 and student nurse Sheila Cure 28 were identified as survivors of a mountain crash. Rescue forces from the RCAF and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter reported they were in good physical condition six miles from the wreck on Mount Hozomeen. A rescue team reached the valley where they hide among cliffs and dense timber, with landing sites distant.

Barbara Ann Scott reports her wallet was taken Friday night from a dressing room at the Granite Club in Toronto. Police say the wallet contained more than 200 dollars after she cashed a large cheque earlier that day. She is in Toronto as guest of honor at a newspaper byline ball tonight.
