The peace treaty delivered today to German delegates in English and French spans about 8000 words. It assigns Alsace Lorraine to France and places the Saar Basin under international administration temporarily, with Dantzig to become a permanent change.
Ottawa reports Paris summary of peace treaty terms signed May 7. Germany’s army to be cut to 100000 with conscription ended, forts east of the Rhine razed, war production halted, and occupation to continue until reparations are paid. Six battleships and limited naval forces allowed, with submarines surrendered. International bodies and the league of nations outlined. Kaiser to face trial.
The News reports Walter Huckvale president of the Western Canada Irrigation association says arrangements are set for Saturday executive meetings in the city and a citizens gathering to plan reception and entertainment for the convention likely in August. Canada Land and Irrigation Company will pilot delegates for a day and take a special train to Ronalane for a prairie irrigation demonstration. Medicine Hat Mayor M A Brown and Alberta Industrial Development Association president outlined westward industry as Canada's economic solution and a step toward east west unification. About 200 MPs attended chaired by Sir Sam Hughes. Calgary congress planned. Brown canvassed eastern and U S industrial leaders. Calder Meighen and Cowan also spoke.
The CPR annual report to shareholders notes a net earnings shrinkage of 12 043 006 due to wage and material cost hikes while gross earnings rose 85 148 908 from higher wages. London May 7 It is understood the Duke of Devonshire will shortly retire from his post as Governor General of Canada. The Daily Mail says the office will be offered to the Earl of Athlone, Queen Mary’s brother, who would have succeeded the Duke of Connaught if not for his army duties.
Paris May 7 Italy accepts a plan to administer Fiume as a League of Nations mandate until 1923 after which control returns to Italy. Premier Orlando backed the proposal to resume participation in the peace talks.
President Wilson issues a cable call for a special session of Congress to convene Monday May 19 in Washington. The message announces the session and specifies the date for legislative action.
A meeting of Retail Merchants will be held tomorrow at 10.80 AM in the Board of Trade rooms to discuss the AMCA drive.
A Child Welfare meeting at St John’s Presbyterian church explored how military exam methods and school testing relate to educating children. Rev Bishop and Lieut Col Spencer urged preventive health, home duties, and public support for child welfare with lantern slides showing feeding, sanitation, and disease prevention. Plans noted for a world prohibition conference with delegates to meet in Washington on June 9.

A German ammunition depot at Groenen dael, six miles south of Brussels, has been exploding since yesterday morning. Guarded by 150 Belgian soldiers, with 600 German prisoners at work nearby, the blast is feared to have many dead and wounded, though exact tolls will be known in days. The depot sits near the railway station where Canadian troops were inspected by King Albert eight days earlier.
