Prime Minister St Laurent told the Commons he had not fixed an election date and would decide after the coronation. He offered a mathematical argument suggesting August 10 as the possible date, noting July AugustEnumeration could show many absent voters and challenge lists.
A Korean casualties list from Ottawa reports 19 new casualties from the May 3 battle in which Canadians repelled a heavy Communist attack. The total now stands at 62, with five killed, one officer missing, two missing, and 11 wounded. The Royal Canadian Regiment and Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry bore the brunt, with totals rising for RCR to 50 casualties, PPCLI to two killed and six wounded, and Royal Canadian Artillery with four wounded. The tally brings Canada’s Korea losses to 1,384, including 270 dead and 991 wounded. The navy reports three dead and three injured, and the air force one missing. No Albertans were listed among today’s casualties.
In Ottawa CP report, Prime Minister St Laurent confirms Coronation Day June 2 is a legal holiday, with banks government offices and many institutions observing it. Earlier, G K Fraser asked for clarity. a formal notice had been issued January 22. The House also passed final reading on unemployment insurance extending benefits to ill or injured workers after layoff, pending Senate ratification and proclamation.
Regina Little Theatre Society at the Dominion Drama Festival earned praise for an arresting and sincere performance of John Stenbeck's Burning Bright. Edmonton CP report says Alberta has 4 146 627 left in its self liquidating projects fund created four years ago to provide low interest loans for utilities construction. The province allocated 25 million to the new fund this year and applications are already arriving.

In the English Channel off Harwich a pre dawn crash between the British passenger ferry Duke of York and the American Haiti Victory left at least one dead. Survivors were ferried to safety at Harwich and Dover as divers advised. The Duke of York carried 437 passengers and 70 crew. the Haiti Victory towed it later, with 15 crew aboard. The ferry sustained a seven eight foot bow gash. the Haiti Victory reported minimal damage.
PANMUNJOM AP UN truce negotiator reported zero progress toward a Korean armistice after Reds rejected freeing 32,000 North Korean prisoners who refuse to return home. They also spurned Pakistan as neutral custodian for 48,500 nonrepatriables. Gen Nam I charged the proposal was void and unworthy of refutation. Gen Harrison suggested freeing the 32,000 after a truce and granting civilian status to allow settlement in Korea.
John Christie, 55, a Notting Hill tenant, is committed for trial at Old Bailey on four murders. Defense hints two stranglers in the house. remains of six women found in the property as investigation widens.

Interior Secretary Douglas McKay told the House Ways and Means Committee that a tariff and quota bill pushed by influential Republicans could threaten national security and harm the economy. He urged delaying changes, proposing a one year extension of the current Reciprocal Agreement while a presidential commission studies the issue. The Simpson bill would cap petroleum imports at 10 percent of domestic demand and residual fuel oil at five percent to aid coal, but McKay warned of reduced fuel availability for consumer industries.
Ottawa The Commons rejected an opposition demand for an immediate 1.65 per bushel wheat price and defeated a CCF motion of non confidence in wheat price policy. A separate CCF motion for a 25 cent boost over the 1952 initial price was defeated 120 to 52 with Liberals prevailing over opposition groups.

Moisture varies by region with good subsoil in the south and fair to poor in Peace River. Warm spells spur rapid grass growth after a slow start.
Ottawa reports Prime Minister L Laurent asked Parliament to back a strong stance toward Washington to ease U S trade barriers. A PC motion urged vigorous efforts to end U S restrictions on Canadian exports, with Fleming labeling it a confidence issue avoided by wording changes. Stanley Knowles noted the rare parliamentary move.
The Army chaplain described 20000 baptisms among prisoners in Korea war camps. Maj Gen Ivan L Bennet stated about 30000 enemy prisoners joined Bible studies and 642 asked to study for ministry or priesthood.
