London May 6 Labor today won the Lichfield by election. C C Poole a 35 year old railway clerk defeated government contender B Craddock by 826 votes. The result marks the third by election loss for the government in recent weeks amid debates over Chamberlain's foreign policy.
Ottawa May 5 Canadian cattle from the S S Manchester Division were sold at Birkenhead this week per Agriculture Department care advice. Trace on fat cattle was firm and supply cleared readily at 14 1 2 to 17 cents per pound dressed weight including offal. Good dairy cows were quoted firm. Bare pastures and lack of fair weather affected demand for store cattle in parts of Singland.
Calgary May 5 A son's responsibility for supporting his aging father will be tested in the District Court at Drumheller on May 18. The case follows the son's refusal to work off relief for his former city employee father. Drumheller city solicitor W R Sandercock says a civic bylaw implies parental maintenance duties and seeks a court ruling to confirm the interpretation.
In Peiping Chinese authorities shut several city gates and set barricades after a day of tension as rumors spread that Communist and guerrilla forces were nearing the Japanese-occupied capital.

Edmonton May 6 Health Minister Dr W W Cross says feasibility study probes extending the Workmen's Compensation Board to hospital care and medical attention for maternity cases and specific diseases. Government would fund such care if financially sound, with current priorities including tuberculosis infantile paralysis cancer and emergent cases under the Hospital Act.
Regina May 4 The P F P A irrigation dam at Cypress Lake valued at 200000 dollars may restart work next week superintendent John Vallance said already 200 men were listed for the project and all were expected to be used this summer with completion hoped for by fall. The Cypress Lake dam is the final link after two completed dams at Eastend and Val Marie southeast of Cypress Lake.
London May 6 The Duke of Devonshire once governor general of Canada from 1916 to 1921 died at age nearly 70 in his Derbyshire home Gathsworth House In Bastow. He also served as Secretary for Colonies and Civil Lord of the Admiralty and had been in ill health for some time.
Montreal May 5 The Arctic air route across the top of the world is deemed impractical by Commander Donald B MacMillan due to extreme cold long night and fog from ice floes. He cites the possible survival and fate of missing explorer Levaneffsky and airmen in a trans polar flight.
An estate tax appraisal places the late Prince Alexis Mdivani at nearly 3 million dollars. Over 2 million is held in two trust funds established by Barbara Huron Mdivani for his benefit. Alexis Mdivani died from a car crash in Spain on August 1, 1935.
