Italy announces completed military preparations for intervention. Frontier fortifications and Venice protected from aviator bombs. Emergency measures signal heightened readiness and potential escalation of hostilities.
On the Italian frontier Italy and Austria negotiate while Italy strengthens defense with entrenchments barricades and guards. Venice receives special protection with anti airship guns. authorities fear attacks from aircraft despite long range naval guns.
May 6 dispatches report a general flight of Japanese from Mukden after May 3 consular orders. Most Japanese civilians left, leaving a few bankers and railway officials. Chinese greet the exodus with indifference while natives fear the siege threat. Japanese troops occupy strategic positions as Chinese soldiers move south, with many residents headed north. In Hankow efforts for siege preparations continued and some Japanese left the city despite apparent indifference among Chinese residents. Kos Pekin notes the May 5 Japanese ultimatum to China reaching the Japanese legation.
Supreme Court heard Quebec Builders and John Inwood in a suit at Barclay Street. The court granted possession to the builders and allowed the defendant the right to redeem. Archer v Partington references five mechanic liens against Strawboard factory with $7 000 claimed and $2 000 spent prior to city notice posted June 7. Case advances toward conclusion.

London reports secretary of state for the colonies Lewis Harcourt states that General Louis Botha found six wells poisoned with arsenic cattle wash after occupying Swakopmund. German commander Col Francke allegedly ordered water supplies withheld and later used copper dip to render wells usable, with further claims of wells along the railway line poisoned during retreat.
