Medicine Hat MP Bert Hargrave brands proposed grain freight rate changes "terrible" and "wrong" and warns the Prime Minister’s reversal on Crowsnest Pass rates could threaten Canadian unity. He spoke from his Ottawa office on Wednesday night.
Hargrave says the Quebec Liberal caucus pressured Prime Minister Trudeau and Pepin to drop the pay the producer plan, accusing them of blackmail. He warns the shift to all rail subsidies risks blocking diversification, inflaming Eastern Western and English French tensions, and harming prairie farmers.
Major western farm groups say Transport Minister Pepin has made his plan to scrap the Crow rate easier to accept after announcing changes. The government will now pay the entire 651 million dollar annual grain-hauling subsidy to railways, link rates to grain prices, and add new crops to the qualifying list.
