City council approves sharp rise in property tax mill rates

Medicine Hat council adopted a 1981 budget raising residential rates to 64.31 mills for small homes and 70.31 mills for larger units while commercial and industrial rates climb to 109.47 mills. The levy funds education and municipal services, with about seven million going to education and a $10.07 million federal energy tax payment shaping the year. Alderman Davison blamed inflation debt and provincial debt reduction policies, noting the city must also cover a large education foundation levy and warn that future budgets may need higher taxes, capital cuts, or service reductions. Taxes due June 30. sewer and water charges unchanged.
