Calgary May 6 Attorney General J E Brownlee said he has read of the Drumheller constable’s death and has not yet decided on prosecution. He will determine action before Edmonton trip and notes department’s unusual interest. He also discusses wheat pool talks and northern railways.
Passengers on the Denver and Rio Grande Western passenger train No 3 assisted the injured after a wreck near Woodside Utah. Dr M M Young aboard the train said thirty eight were injured with several possibly fatally hurt. The crash occurred around 11 p m as cars piled atop two locomotives after the engines derailed on a mountain curve.
London May 4 The Independent Labor Party announces planned direct action by workers in Great Britain if the government moves to break off relations with Ross or cancel agreements. Since the House of Commons noted the Indian relations issue is under consideration the labor group says it stands ready to act to block such a step.
Winnipeg officials announce Manitoba will deploy border patrols with fast vehicles, machine guns, sawed off shotguns, heavy artillery, and tear bombs to deter raids. A secret service-style reform is to monitor for raiders with orders to shoot to stop. Last year the southern province faced multiple bandit incidents.
Farmers increasingly house pullets in winter for better maturation and efficiency. Housed birds stay near feed and consume more grain, while confinement until spring avoids stress from alternating outdoor and coop life.
Drumheller Alberta May 4 Ike Triter will face a murder charge for the death of Constable Charles Paris of the Drumheller town police. The charge follows an open verdict by the coroner’s jury at the Drumheller inquest. Andrew Buchanan, who was with Triter, will be charged as a witness under the Alberta Liquor Act. The coroner’s jury found Constable Paris died May 2 at about 10 30 p.m. while riding on a running board of a McLaughlin roadster driven by Triter at excessive speed during an attempted arrest near Railway Avenue and Sixth Street East Drumheller.
Lenoxtille Quebec May 5 D Coleman vice president of the Canadian Pacific Railway Western Lines announced authorization for new branch line work in the west. The Tauifnell Prince Albert line first fifty miles, Wymark second section twenty five miles, and the Kipp Retlin line to Little Bow river crossing. Cirding work may delay to allow final surveys and irrigation canal crossings. Rosetown South line sections from Empress Wilden junction to mile 45, already partly built, will be completed.
George Hincks and Marshall Miie Dougall two disabled ex-soldiers are on a Calgary to Ottawa hike. Accompanied by Tom Bennett the trio arrives in Medicine Hat and will host meetings on soldiers affairs. A city visit is planned with details to come in a later issue.
Port Arthur May 5 Navigation between the lower lakes and Port Arthur opened at midnight with the steamer Huronie from Sarnia bringing a large cargo of package freight. Five more vessels followed to load grain and receive the first grain cargoes of the season at the elevators.
Delegates at the Lausanne peace conference struggle to resolve disputes over foreign advisers for Turkey and the status of consular courts. Ismet Pasha and Turkey reject renewed discussion after Allies push to reopen the adviser question. The conference ends without a date for the next meeting, with experts continuing work but risk of collapse remains if the adviser issue is not settled.

A New York report cites Ford Motor Company's assets at 420.95 million dollars as of February 28 1923 with cash of 159.61 million and estimated net profits around 129 million. Wall Street projects Ford’s fortune near 600 to 760 million, surpassing Rockefeller whose wealth is declining.
At Atowa on May 5 Arthur Maighen questioned W D Robb’s fit for the express chief role given his lack of direct railway experience and a $26 000 annual salary. Graham said many such high paid vice-presidents exist. Meighen urged limiting parliamentary intrusion into management details.
