At Montreal meeting J W Beatty notes 1919 gross earnings surpassed 1918 by 19.9 million yet net earnings fell by 1.57 million due to costs. Expenses rose sharply, wages and materials drive costs despite strong revenue and maintained fixed charges and dividends.
Montreal May 4. The Canadian Federation of Returned Soldiers and Sailors favors steady work over a cash bonus. Delegates will be chosen Thursday to form a deputation to meet the Dominion Government and opposition leaders next Monday. They aim to persuade Parliament to back Canadian shipbuilding and guarantee ongoing employment for veterans across Canadian yards.

Edmonton May 4 Sen C Reo Mitchell provincial treasurer announces the sale by tender this afternoon to the Dion Securities Corporation and associates of two million dollars Alberta three year six percent bonds at price 1016740 Canadian funds to cost the province about five point four zero percent. Proceeds to be used exclusively for provincial telephone construction.
Paris reports that the nationwide railway workers strike is virtually over with volunteers aiding traffic and many strikers returning to work since Saturday. Miners in the Angin Basin plan a May 7 strike, but Northern France shows improvement as about 35 percent of workers are at work.
In San Francisco on May 4 Henry R Hoefler of Astoria Ore a candy manufacturer failed to obtain an injunction preventing his son Harry Voefler of San Francisco from making candy. The court ruled the injunction unjustified as the son used a carton similar to the father's.
Lethbridge Herald reports a potential takeover by the Department of Natural Resources of the Canada Land and Irrigation Co. officials say there is no confirmation and the rumor has recurred over years. Mr J W McLane notes no official word has been received.
Ottawa May 5 Major CG WL Andrews Winnipeg Centre asks in the House whether Canada will sell the 1920 wheat crop through the Wheat Board. He questions government plans when the board’s term ends and asks about participation certificates and potential cash payments to farmers.
Lethbridge May 5 The Alberta Mennonites known as the Hutterites will not trek to Mississippi Valley with Mennonite colonies from Manitoba Saskatchewan and Saskatchewan. They will remain to plant the largest acreage they have yet sown and there is no trouble with provincial educational authorities.
