In Birmingham Alabama Mrs Lukeen Wallace led nine male candidates in the Democratic primary for governor with 294 353 votes out of 2 413 counted boxes 3645, defeating Attorney General Richmond Flowers and other rivals as the Wallaces’ influence persisted in a surge that included strong Black voter turnout under the Voting Rights Act. Flowers carried the Negro vote in some counties but failed to force a runoff. Also renominated was U S Senator John Sparkman.

Crown to help pay Truscott trial costs

Marines Kill At Least 47 Viet Cong Near Da Nang
U S marines reported killing at least 47 Viet Cong troops near Da Nang South Viet Nam as two U S companies engaged in Operation Georgia came under mortar and machine gun fire while crossing a river 25 miles southwest of the city. American losses were light and 2 000 troops in the operation said to have killed 80 guerrillas in two weeks. France imposes monthly NATO overflight review
PARIS AP reports France informed its major NATO partners that as of June 1 authorization for NATO military aircraft to fly over or land in France will be subject to monthly review. Previously permissions were annual. The change allows French authorities to revoke overflight rights on 30 days notice, a move tied to President de Gaulle’s plan to reduce Allied presence in France. The policy primarily targets the United States, which accounts for about 100000 overflights yearly, but affects Canada, West Germany, Britain and other allies with bases in France.

Dupuis appeals conviction in influence peddling case
