Edmonton contracts totaling 443,483 for bridges were awarded by the provincial highways department including a 362,117 deal for Oldman River bridge and an 81,366 project on a North Saskatchewan River span near Fort Saskatchewan. A fire in Barrhead destroyed a frame and stucco garage causing about 100,000 in damage, suspected to have started when gasoline drained from a car exploded.
Two year old Betty Ann Asselman of Bowness strayed from playmates and fell into the Bow River Friday afternoon near Bowness Park. She drowned in the river. A separate Alberta census shows Red Deer population up 10 per cent since 1956 to 13,580, with 12,760 last year and 9,164 in 1953.
Robert Hobbs, 72, drowned Friday after slipping on a roller-par on the deck of the Western Fisher in Howe Sound near Vancouver. The fishing boat was crewed by Hobbs and other workers at the time of the accident.
