The text notes Arieux captured by Canadian forces defeating picked troops of the Prussian Guards at Oppy and Loeux. It describes fierce fighting around Loeux with close combat and hand to hand clashes where even Yonets have been forgotten as soldiers fight ferociously for each other.
The British, expanding a four day advance, seized Fresnoy and surrounding trenches near Cherisy as Canadian and British troops press the Oppy Maricourt line. Prisoners exceed 1 000 and fighting continues along the Arras front with Germans repulsed in renewed assaults.
A civic meeting at City Hall discussed Capt Pearson’s visit and YMCA efforts in England and France. Bowell outlined YMCA activities including 66 institutes in England, 51 in France, with dugout aid on the front. Campaign seeks 660000 dollars, cities like Montreal and Toronto contributing, and London plans a center on the Strand.
Major General Mewburn, head of the Canadian Defense Forces, says voluntary recruiting has failed and conscription is the only way to raise the 60 000 man quota. He envisions tribunals assessing draftees for suitable employment, minimizing disruption to trades and food production.
