NASA plans another launch from Cape Canaveral to place the GOES-7 weather satellite on a Delta rocket after a prior delay due to a fuel leak. Officials say flushing and testing showed no further leakage and the craft will monitor storms from space.
President Reagan accused the Soviet Union of stubborn refusal to inform the world about the Chernobyl nuclear accident near Kiev. He urged a full accounting and contrasted Soviet secrecy with open discussion among democracies at the Tokyo economic summit. A six member Steger International Polar Expedition team from the United States and Canada completed an 800 kilometer 56 day journey from Ward Hunt Island to the North Pole. They become the first self-sufficient expedition to recreate Peary's 1909 pole trek with radio reports and airlifted return planned from Resolute Bay. The party includes co-leader Will Steger Geoff Carroll and Anne Bancroft with two Canadians Brent Boddy and Richard Weber. Twelve dogs were lifted out and two teammates were evacuated due to injuries and frostbite.
