A drought disrupted U S cattle supplies pushing imports from Western Canada while Canadian herds face tight fat cattle availability. A 16 year old Medicine Hat youth Dennis Ziebart was rushed to Municipal Hospital after a midnight crash on the Trans-Canada highway bridge. He sustained injuries requiring about 40 stitches but remained conscious and in good condition. The driver Ron Sulz 16 received minor injuries. Ches Hays assisted in transport. Police investigate.
Claude Jodoin of the Canadian Labor Congress said the move to participate in forming a new political movement will not alter the neutrality of government employee unions within the congress. The statement notes many affiliated unions consist exclusively of government workers and must remain strictly neutral.
RCMP and a three province search resume for Russell Ross and accomplice after a jail escape in Inverness County. The pair fled a night express mail car robbery on April 17 stealing stamps and mail bags before disappearing with help. Caron, 21, of Albert Bridge, tied to the escape, awaits sentencing.
Medicine Hat council may decide whether to buy rights to gas acreage known as the buffer zone. A special meeting is set for Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the council chambers with Dr G W Govier and Robert L Reed among attendees. Britalia Corp may seek to persuade the city to acquire gas rights or risk export permit options if no agreement is reached.
The royal commission on energy resources held a special session in Calgary to hear Shell Oil Company of Canada Ltd argument against an Edmonton to Montreal crude oil pipeline. Shell officials disputed throughput guarantees and warned that moving Canadian crude to Montreal could flood world markets by displacing Venezuelan imports.
A Toronto transit monorail conference was canceled after Monorail Inc of Texas declined to send representatives. President Marel Goodwell said the firm would have met Reeve Vern Singer in a small informal session but wasn’t prepared for a full conference.
In El Paso a burglar stole 12 lead bricks weighing 20 pounds each used in nuclear medicine. Dr. Vincent Ravel, head of radiology at El Paso General Hospital, warned the thief could die without prompt medical treatment from radiation exposure.
The Alberta Court of Appeal upholds damages of 16750 to relatives of four killed in a level-crossing crash at Box Springs Crossing near Medicine Hat on Feb 11 1954. The Canadian Pacific Railway, train conductor William Harnett and driver Allan Busse were found liable. Busse and four victims named Gatzke Knapsiz Flynn and Harnett injured or killed in the 12 02 a m collision as the Ford was struck broadside and dragged 1300 feet. The two girls were student nurses at Medicine Hat hospital.
A group calling itself the Canadian Associates for a Sane Nuclear Policy plans a Sunday march through downtown Montreal to the US consulate general to protest forthcoming nuclear bomb tests in the Pacific. Spokesman Keith Wright said several marchers will camp overnight for a conscience vigil in front of the office.
