Calgary May 3 The Turgeon royal grain commission enters the final week of Calgary sittings with Paul Bredt president of Manitoba Pool Elevators Ltd still on the witness stand after about 30 hours of testimony He favored a marketing system that would assure producers a fair price for wheat noting the 1929 international market and Argentina’s selling pressure influenced attitudes Canadian salesmen balked at facing Argentina demand The pools shared belief that Argentina supply was not exhaustible and Canada would sell at a reasonable price despite large carryovers The record includes claims that pools did not purchase futures after guarantees were given and that futures trading occurred with government consent before 1930.

Warships to Protect Bilbao Refugee Evacuation Vessels

London May 3 Foreign Secretary Eden said British warships were ordered to shield non combatant refugee ships leaving Bilbao. Evacuation of about 5000 children to France was expected to start today with coast guns guarding the routes to open seas. Reports from Bilbao claimed heavy combat as Basque forces said 18000 German and Italian troops and 110 foreign planes fought with the insurgents.

Sinks After Collision In North Sea Claims 10 Lives

A.P. report says the Yugoslav steamer Plavnik and the British steamer Alecto collided in fog off the North Sea. Alecto sank quickly, Plavnik rescued four of Alecto’s 14 crew including the chief engineer. President Roosevelt examined the scene and then moved to Southampton after a vain search for more survivors.

Forest fires race through Breton area near Edmonton

High winds fan out-of-control forest fires along the Hoadley spur of the Canadian Pacific Railway about 50 miles southwest of Edmonton. Breon and nearby areas face dense smoke as fires spread from Pigeon Lake to Breton’s north. Knoghill Sawmill Company properties at Winfield are destroyed, estimated losses around 5,000 dollars.

Woman leaps from Colorado Street Bridge after throwing child

In Pasadena a young woman hurled a four year old from the 100 foot high Colorado street bridge then jumped herself. Both were taken to a hospital where the woman was not expected to survive while the child might recover. A note on the bridge identified the woman as Myrtle Ward of Los Angeles.

Douglas says social credit plan possible but not now

Major C H Douglas wrote in a letter read in Glenevis that he would not visit Alberta to draft a social credit plan while a three corner fight with Premier Aberhart and financial interests is ongoing. A V Bourcier MLA Lac Ste Anne, speaking Friday, said the provincial government must be reorganized before Douglas would come, though he added the plan can be done later despite Aberhart actions.

May 3 report from Ottawa states Lorne R. Van Allen 23 and Robert Walters 18 were fatally injured when a light Ot tawa Flying Club plane crashed after a high altitude maneuver about 60 feet off a field near Van Camp Ontario.
