A six member Canadian Forces expedition reached the North Pole early today after trekking across the Arctic ice cap. Maj. Don Marsh confirmed the team arrived at 8:50 Zulu (5:50 a.m. MST) and carried a beacon tracked by SARSAT from CFB Trenton in Ontario.
Canada Post announces a task force to address stamps that fail to adhere. Spokeswoman Tyra Henschel cites causes such as cold weather, weak stamp gum, or envelopes absorbing too much glue, with the supplier increasing gum content to fix the issue.
Moscow reports the Chernobyl blaze is diminishing and says all similar Soviet reactors have been shut down. Ambassador Kasatkin said the situation is under control and no outside aid is needed, while Western experts caution radiation remains a concern. Dr. Gale arrives in Moscow to assist bone marrow treatment.
The task force ruled out a second Chernobyl style meltdown after satellite images. Western papers warned the Soviets might have shut 20 reactors of the same type, risking half their nuclear output. Angela Andres a 19 year old Care Cabs driver was abducted early Thursday from a taxi on Thirteenth Avenue Southeast and dumped in scrub near the city outskirts. She was found alive around 11:30 a.m. and is listed in stable condition at Medicine Hat and District Hospital. Police seek a suspect while investigators with Care Cabs discuss safety measures.
Noella Leclair of Ottawa was in critical but stable condition after the bridging operation at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Surgeon Dr. Wilbert Keon said the 41 year old patient was effectively dead before the operation and awakened at 6 am the next day though she cannot speak due to a breathing tube.
Kamloops Blazers beat Medicine Hat Tigers 5-2 in whl finals game to tie the series 1-1 at The Arena. Rob Brown scored the winner early in the first period as Kamloops built a 3-2 lead after one period. Game 3 moves to Medicine Hat tonight with schedule considerations and potential further games in Kamloops.
