Fifteen Social Credit executives sign a letter to president Hattersley vowing to keep Jim Keegstra as vice-president. They accuse Hattersley of lacking constitutional power and warn against forcing his resignation as Keegstra seeks to remain in the party despite previous controversy. Keegstra welcomes the support and hints it could influence Hattersley’s decision.

A man identified as Ryszard Smagura died after a May Day demonstration in Nowa Huta, Poland, where up to 10,000 people clashed with police using tear gas and clubs. The protests spread to at least 20 towns, paralleling official Communist marches, with wider demonstrations reported in Gdansk and Warsaw.
The Alberta Federation of Labor pledges funds and moral support to unions defying Bill 44 which revokes the right to strike for 28 000 hospital workers including 8 500 nurses. Dave Werlin calls the bill one of Canada’s worst and an emergency conference is set for May 15 in Edmonton.
With three days left in the B C election race Premier Bill Bennett and NDP leader Dave Barrett trade charges in Surrey and Maple Ridge. Bennett mocks the NDP as paranoid and negative while Barrett accuses the Socreds of dirty tricks and lies. Both campaign hard in the Vancouver area highlighting megaprojects deficits and job creation claims.
