Weather reports predict rainy cool conditions across Alberta today and tomorrow with temperatures dipping to the mid forties and peaking near fifty on Sunday. An east wind gusting to 40 mph is expected to continue overnight and into Sunday.
The entertainer Bing Crosby marks his sixtieth birthday while his family expands. His sixth child came from his second wife Kathryn Grant, then 30, with a son born when Crosby was fifty seven. A daughter followed prior to that birth.
The Medicine Hat and District Medical Society hosted a meeting with the president elect of the Alberta Division of the Canadian Medical Association and other medical association representatives. Medicine Hat Sea Cadets and Navy League join a church parade to mark Navy Week. The march forms at 10 a.m. from the 2nd St. S.E. parking lot and proceeds to St Barnabas Anglican Church for an 11 a.m. service. A wreath is placed at the Cenotaph in Riverside Park for Battle of the Atlantic dead.
A pre-dawn blast sank the 9,800 ton USS Card near Saigon as eight Americans were wounded. Viet Cong blamed for the attack while Vietnamese rangers suffered a devastating ambush 25 miles northwest of Saigon. The Card later began to refloat as divers inspected the hull in the river.
The National Film Board of Canada took three first place blue ribbons at the Ed ucational Film Library Associa tion festival in New York for 16 millimeter non theatrical works. My Financial Career by Gerald Potterton led the literature category, Figure Skating by Ernest Reid won sports recreation and physical education, and Lewis Mumford on the City tied for first in citizenship government and city planning.
An unnamed source says the United States quietly began a Florida coastline military buildup in response to Castro’s threat to shoot down U S spy planes. The Pentagon denies special measures, aiming to be ready if needed, echoing the 1962 missile crisis.
In Espanola Ontario Prime Minister Pearson promoting a new national flag spoke to a crowd at Royal Canadian Legion Branch 39 in Algoma East. He urged Canadians to unite under new symbols while honoring veterans and other emblems. He received standing ovations for his unity message and belief in a strong united Canada.
