Paris reports Italy’s stance on the Axis has grown alarmingly tense. London confirms precautionary measures directing British shipping away from the Mediterranean amid fascist rhetoric and warnings of possible Italian entry into the war.
In a major night operation the Royal Air Force dispatched a large formation against Stavanger airport in southwestern Norway, destroying four German fighters and damaging installations. Other raids hit Fornebu near Oslo and Aalborg in Denmark, with RAF losses totaling seven aircraft as missions continued into morning.
Vancouver reports April 60. Alberta Minister of Public Works Hoan W A Fallon says a pipeline from Turner Valley fields to British Columbia will be built soon after proof of a long term oil supply. He notes increased earnings, thrift, and expected stronger traffic from lumber and inland coastal shipping, with better ocean steamship earnings despite 1939 instability. Weather and rain deficits in prairie provinces may affect crop prospects.

London May 1 CP Cable reports the crash of a German bomber shot by anti aircraft guns and its mined load at Glaxton on Sea killed all five Nazi crew and caused England's first civilian air raid casualties led to charred bodies pulled from debris. Explosion ruined three houses and damaged fifty, creating a large crater with damage around 145000 dollars. A second report from Stockholm cites a British destroyer blown to pieces in an all day raid on Namsos harbor with many marines and sailors killed and others taken aboard a cruiser. Further details describe six German planes attacking at 7 15 am, destroying a British destroyer and causing ammunition explosions. The Germans reportedly lose two planes during the attack.
Ottawa May 1 The Labour Minister Hon Norman McLarty said the Dominion government will not intervene in the dispute between the British Columbia government and major oil companies over wholesale gasoline prices. He added it is purely a provincial matter and noted the Supreme Court of Canada upheld provincial price fixing powers.
A German plane crashed in flaming wreckage in a residential district on England’s Fingland coast late last night. British fighters and anti-aircraft guns engaged enemy planes along several coastal areas. Unidentified aircraft crossed the Humber estuary. heavy gunfire and explosions were reported near Yorkshire.
