Provincial Treasurer consults with local Liberals while not connected directly with the constituency. Minister has intimate knowledge of the Public Works Department.
Hon. C. R. Mitchell outlined the South Country road program in Medicine Hat. The trunk road from Medicine Hat to Carlstadt will be extended to Brooks along the C. P. R. This follow up project, plus further work from Bow Island to Whitla and toward Medicine Hat, aims to boost through traffic and improve southern Alberta road conditions.
Government proclamation by Secretary Garrison demands surrender of all arms and ammunition. The sweeping order targets every citizen and strikers alike, urging Coloradans and U S troops to disarm across the nation.
Under presidential authority Secretary of War Garrison issues a proclamation in Colorado strike districts directing all persons not in military service to surrender arms and ammunition to U S army officers. Receipts to be issued. applies to individuals firms associations and corporations.
Mayor Brown proposes city owned and operated bus service between Medicine Hat and Redcliff with a low round trip fare. A special committee of Aldermen Pratt Pentland and Kent will study costs and scheduling and report at Monday’s regular meeting. The plan envisions six to eight daily trips and a business like operation.
May reports from St. John’s describe heavy ice pack off Newfoundland risking wrecks and port blockages. The Allan Line steamer Pomerlan remains 22 miles off Cape Race unable to enter St John’s harbor as weather and ice shift. The Donaldson Jinér Tritonia amid Notre Dame Bay faces possible wreck with ice closing in at the bay entrance. Other steams in the gulf report craft trapped by winds and floes, with several vessels due in days.
Fire swept through Tara Ontario this morning destroying half the business section with about $20,000 in losses. The blaze indirectly caused the death of Mrs A Miller who had been ill and left a building near the fire, prompting a relapse she did not recover from.
A. B. Emery, manager of an English owned mine, was reported held for ransom by Federals in Zadecas. He is safe in Mexico City, with the ransom matter settled. Emery may remain in the capital for the present per the consul in Vera Cruz.
The navy department announced that sailors and marines killed at Vera Cruz will receive national funeral services upon the arrival of their bodies aboard the United States cruiser Montana in New York. The ceremony marks a nationwide tribute to the fallen servicemen.
The Retail Merchants Association told the mayor they will hold a holiday on Monday after 3 PM for a 4 PM baseball game. The mayor proclaimed the half day to allow attendance at the first W C L game. In future merchants plan half-day closings each Wednesday after noon.
Washington May 2 Licentiate Esteba Ruiz appointed minister of foreign affairs in Huerta cabinet to succeed Portillo Y Rojas retired. The Spanish ambassador was informed by cable and will pass the news to mediators. Ruiz, a former under secretary, has aided mediation talks and the change is not seen as hindering mediation progress.
The cruiser Yankton brings Nelson O Shaughnessy former chargé at Mexico City to the United States and diverts to New Orleans, arriving next Tuesday. O Shaughnessy will travel to Washington Thursday for a White House conference with the president.

Albertan Robert Schufeldt a farmer from Alberta Canada was arrested at the Algonquin cemetery while kneeling at his father's grave. He had fled eight years earlier leaving a wife and two children and is said to have another wife in Alberta. A committee overseeing a forthcoming industrial dinner announced it would be postponed two weeks to finish preliminary plans and set a new date later.
A bad break in a water main on Fifth Street S caused extensive property damage to Mr. Heald park superintendent. An old wooden main detached at the plug flooding the street for some distance. The break was repaired and water service restored by morning.
Redcliff Alberta May 1 contractors McLaughlin and McLean start a two storey brick building 26 by 60 on Broadway near Third Street for W T Lockwood. A hall is planned to make a credit to the town. The Redcliff Light and Power drilling crew begins preparations for gas well number seven in the industrial section. Completion expected in a few months.
May 1 reports from Chihuahua say Carranza and Villa plan major operations before taking cities like Torreon and Monterey. A royal reception of an American reporter underscored a friendly stance as troops move toward Tampico and Saltillo with intents to campaign against San Luis Potosi and Zacatecas.
In Montevideo May 2 a disorderly session of the chamber of deputies debated a pro Mexican display. Barbaroux cited that Battle of Uruguay sought US intervention during early-year revolt and that Battle received a Huerta letter but did not intend to recognize the Huerta government. Battle later refused a Huerta envoy. Henry Palmer of Bayham Ontario was convicted of arson at St Thomas and got a two year sentence.
In St Louis Hop Alley mourns Haw Line Shuck, a U S immigration officer killed last night. Lee Ring prophesies a Tong war after the shooting while Chicago and New York Chinese circle to extend their Tong presence in St Louis. Bing cites Chicago talks of creating a local branch. locals fear violence.
Paris May 2 Joseph Caillaux, re elected to the Chamber, has challenged Liberal candidate M de Aillieres to a duel in the Mamers district after Caillaux resigned the French ministry following his wife’s killing of editor Calmette. Caillaux sent seconds General Balstein and Deputy Pascal Occaldi to D Aillieres. Socialists refused to carry the British flag in a May Day parade at Winnipeg.
Delegations from Alberta and nearby states gather in the city for the Knights of Columbus convention. A mass at St Patrick's Church in Calgary Bishop McNally will celebrate with visiting knights. Initiations begin at 10 am at the curling rink followed by a banquet at 7:36 pm prepared by parish ladies.
