In Moscow crowds estimated at about a million workers watched a May Day parade as bombers and planes roared overhead. Leaders including Joseph Stalin were present at the tomb of Lenin. military strength and reviews highlighted the display.
The Inner Empress of Australia with Prime Minister Mackenzie King and four Canadian cabinet ministers arrived in Southampton from Cherbourg after seven pleasant sea days. King spoke of the Dominion movement to Britain for the coronation as a voluntary act of goodwill and loyalty to the King and Queen. He called it a world object lesson.
A grass fire of unknown origin spread to a tool shed owned by H. J. Minor at the east end of the Medicine Hat Clay Products property last night. Firefighters arrived at 5 55 p m and quickly subdued the blaze. The shed interior and roof were charred while little damage was done to drill tools stored inside.
Miie Garrick of Wrentham faced Magistrate Hyland at Bow Island on charges of horse stealing across Coaldale Turin and Wrentham. Seven counts involved 53 horses valued at 2010 dollars. Garrick was captured as Stirling by Constables Shaw and Crocket and pled guilty, receiving three years six months on each charge with concurrent sentences in Prince Albert.
The Little Theatre ends its season with a two night presentation of a three act play. Joan Hays directed the cast led by Mrs Knowles and daughter Melisande with Henry Knowles and Jane Bagot in key roles. Backstage work earned credit for room settings and woodland scenes while Frank Novax conducted musical interludes between acts.
Adjudicator Michel St. Denis praised The Strolling Players of Vancouver for strong fourth and fifth acts in Rudolph Bessier's The Barrets of Wimpole Street and lauded the Toronto Masquers for A House in the Quiet Glen by John Coultier. British merchantmen aided by warships plan to evacuate civilians from Bilbao despite insurgent refusals to respect foreign vessels. Captains of nine ships aim to remove 4 000 to 5 000 children to St Jean de Luz after a Bilbao conference with the British consul R C Stevenson.
London awoke to a bus workers strike at midnight affecting 12 800 drivers and 12 700 conductors in the city and 120 000 in surrounding districts. The walkout aims to shorten the eight hour day by 30 minutes and slow schedules after rejection of demands. Solidarity action from Chelmsford buses followed Bevin's last minute truce appeal. The city’s last buses run near 12 30 am as drivers agree to complete their run rather than abandon vehicles.
Dublin reports a new constitution proclaiming Ireland sovereign and independent and denying reference to Britain or the King. It sets Irish as the national language, allows a directly elected president, and calls for a plebiscite with general elections likely in June.
Tokyo May 1 Early returns show major parties Minseit e and Seiyukai winning sweeping victories. No government candidates elected to the House in four cities including Kushima Wa kamatsu Kainan and Matsue. Premier Hayashi says the government will retain power despite the defeats.
Justice of the Peace J H Hella wall held court at Thelma yesterday and fined Hugh Jones twenty dollars and costs for infractions of the Game Act related to trapping beaver in Cypress Hills forest reserve. George Ambrose, game guardian and forest ranger, located the poacher’s camp at daybreak and made the arrest at Graburn Gap. A strict watch is reported in the Hills and surrounding area amid suspicions of other violators and illegal pelt dealers.
Magistrate Ellis this morning found M Woodruff guilty of assaulting Frank Hok on April 21 and fined Woodruff $5 plus costs. A counter-charge of assault against Hok was dismissed.

Shipman in Hamilton planning a $500,000 paper mill, Montreal’s Gaspesia Sulphite to reopen Chandler Soupa plant within three months, Canada Cement to build bagging plant, Port Arthur firms Bayless Brothers Drilling to invest $20,000 in a machine shop, and expansions by Consolidated Paper and Canadian Westinghouse.
