London May 1 The government declares a state of emergency granting near unlimited powers to maintain order and ensure vital supplies. Troops may be used if needed though no industrial conscription is allowed. A general strike in support of coal miners is set for next Tuesday.
London May 1 The General Council of the Trades Union Congress issues memorandum outlining which trades to halt and which to continue work to protect mines. It lists transport utilities docks roads rail repair shops air transport printing iron and steel chemicals building trades with hospital works electricity and gas excluded. Sanitary services health and hospital supplies to remain uninterrupted.
At the Codville Co. annual meeting in Winnipeg on April 27, N. M. Waldo, long time branch manager, elected to the Board of Directors and becomes managing director of the Medicine Hat branch.
In Col PF C Sissons garden the Wealthy apple tree dominates a display of bloom with crab apples adding charm. Bees cover the blossoms as they promise a heavy harvest though thinning will be needed to prevent limb breakage.
Shanghai May 1 The Danish aviator Lieut Botved who disappeared after leaving Shanghai for Peking has been found at a village ten miles northeast of Yacheng. He was forced down by engine trouble during a long distance flight from Copenhagen to Tokio.
Winnipeg reports an erratic day on the Grain Exchange with light volume and weak export demand. May closed 1 8 higher at 1.55 3 4, July down to 1.03 3 4, October up 1 8 to 1.86 1 2 as coal strikes in Britain and bearish factors weighed on values. Chicago gains checked the downtrend and shorts covered after a dip. Coarse grains remained firm despite weak inquiry.
The annual meeting of the Medicine Hat Community Rink Company Limited will be held at the police court room city hall on Tuesday at 8 30 pm. Annual reports will be presented and officers elected. A full attendance of shareholders is requested.
Four of the 25 freighters held by ice at Fort William sailed east at six this morning marking the season’s first sailings from the head of the lakes. Opening navigation release of six million bushels of grain is anticipated. Owen Sound ships also began, with the Hines and BH. B. Osler departing for the head of the lakes.

Topics include trespassing vandalism, riding bicycles on sidewalks, damaging property, profane language, fires, catapults, discharging firearms, and avoiding crosses with civic or military processions. He stresses prevention and aims to give school students insight into city bylaws.
Fred Davey, prominent official of the Independent Foresters and former member of the British Columbia legislature, died in Victoria. The passing removes a noted figure in provincial forestry and political circles.
Ottawa May 1 The chief Conservative whip W A Boys and North Simcoe MP faced a customs inquiry with testimony that David Waisberg offered two to three thousand dollars yearly to pass silk without examination. Kendall seized a silk trunk valued about 1600 dollars and warned Waisberg. Letters between Boys and Jacques Bureau were read as evidence. The ministeral officials discussed leniency in exchange for double duty and sales tax payments, prompting the committee to adjourn until Tuesday.
Munich May 1 Professor Fritz Ransenberger 58 co director of Krupp works and inventor of the 12 centimeter Bertha gun died suddenly yesterday. The weapon helped bombard Paris from 72 miles during the war. John Dongans, a Scotsman who settled in the Re sina district in 1882, is dead.
Alexandra High School releases exam results with percentages for comparison. Honors reach 75 percent, Class I 70, Class II 60, Class II 54, below 50 deemed failures. Lists show Grade XII and XI honor and class standings with many names and notes on parental reports.
Ottawa reports show budget debate in the House of Commons with Conservative and Liberal speakers critiquing tariff and income tax changes. Conservatives like Finlay MacDonald and W. E. Rowe call the finance minister's plan a forked budget while Liberals urge tariff use to aid Canadian manufacturers and farmers.
George E. Osborne a milk wagon driver was sentenced in Philadelphia to three to six years after shooting and killing James F. Hartley a butcher. Osborne acted after returning home and finding Hartley embracing Mrs. Osborne.

James Louen of Medicine Hat an inmate from Ponoka Mental Hospital was found dead beside railway tracks near Morningside after disappearing from the hospital Wednesday. Police and investigators consider suicide by jumping between the wheels as no blood was seen on the engine and the body was mangled along the northbound line.
In Chicago on May 1 a man identified as Martin Garrity was shot while in a taxicab with three companions. The assailants forced the driver to relocate several blocks before fleeing. Garrity’s body was found in an alley. The city seeks clues as the murder adds to its long list of unsolved slayings.
