Riga reports Bolshevik Premier Nikolai Lenine, despite two recent operations, remains actively directing Soviet affairs at Genoa by radio and wire. He instructed Tchitcherin not to concede full restoration of private foreign ownership or propose compensation for nationalized property.
In Genoa on May 1 Foreign Minister Tchitcherin heads the Russian delegation at the economic conference and writes to France's Vice President Barthou assuring no secret military or political clauses exist in the Rapallo Russo German treaty. Russia states it is not hostile to France despite French tensions.
The G W V A decided at its meeting to march as a body to the memorial unveiling on May 24. Comrade W D Cox is tasked with leading a parade of G W V A members, widows and parents of deceased comrades if possible, with members urged to join the guard of honor or parade participation.
Indianapolis May 1 For the second month of the national coal strike United Mine Workers officials said no settlement was in sight over the wage dispute affecting more than 600000 miners. They estimated 680000 workers joined the walkout including 75000 non union miners in bituminous fields 450000 union bituminous workers and 165000 anthracite workers. Union officials said strength had not peaked and called for further action to close non union fields especially in Central Pennsylvania.
The general board of the Presbyterian church is in session in Toronto arranging for the upcoming convention set for June in Winnipeg.
London reports a one shilling cut in the income tax rate to five shillings per pound. Chancellor Sir Robert Horne also lowered tea duties by four pence per pound, and presented the annual budget to the House of Commons.
In Belfast on May 1 reports say the Irish Republican army seized more than 100000 pounds sterling from various Bank of Ireland branches in the south. The news comes as Dublin reveals a breakdown of conference talks on the Anglo Irish treaty with three government proposals rejected by the opposition. A plebiscite plan was rejected, and talks adjourned. In Thamesville Ontario two half breeds were charged with Constable Pickard’s murder during a robbery. another was jailed for robbery.
J V Steele 34, manager of the Bank of Commerce in Champion for 15 months, shot himself amid despondency over work and drought hardships. A note to his wife explained the strain, son of Rev George Steele of Newfoundland Methodist missions. Weather notes follow with west regional forecasts.
In St Paul and South St Paul a Sunday spree left three dead and a woman dying. Katharine Becker 33 was shot and possibly fatally wounded by Martin Fiemeyer 26 who then killed himself. Lico Bladu 38 and James S Brandon 25 were also slain. Peter Arbelian 87 sought by police after earlier feud with Bladu. Witnesses link the violence to a two year feud and prior encounters.
