A World War I dispatch notes a quiet Sunday on the eastern Meuse while bombardment intensified near Avocourt on the West Bank. The report highlights contrasting conditions along adjacent fronts with active artillery and limited ground action.
Paris on May 1 reports German troops launched three coup de main attempts in the Vosges against French trenches near Dead Man’s Hill and Lassigny. French forces repelled the assaults with German casualties and prisoners taken, while air combat yielded several German losses and French captures. The War Office notes heavy fighting northwest of Verdun with French gains, and bombardments along the front with occasional successes for the French.
Dublin reports say rebels laid down arms at Sackville Street near Parnell monument after leaders’ surrender. About 460 fighters gave up with white flags while snipers remained from roof hides. a proffered peace parley followed as authorities declared the revolt near collapse.
Fort William Ont May 1 The elevator strike spreads to four Fort William elevators and Port Arthur Government plant with 30 workers walking out. Some terminals remain unaffected while loading continues. 60 men strike at Grain Growers elevator B and 10 to 30 at others. Remaining forts include Port Arthur Port Arthur Horne Davidson Emith National Fort Arthur and Western Consolidated Empire Ogilvie Grand Trunk Pacific elevators.
Dr Oliver Boyd addresses a large Sunday gathering on consumption urging Canadian cooperation in public health. Rev Mr Morrow introduces efforts by Canadian groups and stresses education and organization to stamp out the toll disease within a generation. He notes consumption affects all people and is communicable, not strictly hereditary, and calls for concerted action across towns provinces and nations.
Professor A. K. Ottewell of the University of Alberta will present an illustrated lecture at Alexandra School tonight. He will discuss Shakespeare and two plays The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. The event is free and open to the public.
Lake of the Woolds Milling Company may rebuild its destroyed plant after a fire that left wheat and flour ruins smoldering. General Manager Matheson arrived with company officials to inspect the scene and said a board meeting will decide the future, but he offered no cause or interview details.
London reports General Townshend and his troops at Kut el Amara surrendered with 13300 men. Constantinople dispatch notes the surrender details and German papers credit German preparations and Der Goltz for the blow against England.
Thirty one beavers trapped under permit were brought to town by W A Taylor for inspection. Beavers damming the creek on the ranch flooded the meadows, prompting the permit. Permits were also issued to destroy beaver on Willow Creek at the ranches of James English and James Mitchell near Blakewater Lake.
London April 30 British communique reports heavy artillery fire on trenches at Fricourt Souchez and west of the Ypres Wilhelm road. Gas shells and small mine explosions occur with raids on Grassler and Doubte Loos. German gains at Hualluch repelled. large gas casualties implied by ambulance reports. East Africa operations note Smuts forces capture munitions convoys near Kondoairangi including 200 slaughter oxen and 600 cattle.
The French passenger liner Patria reports a torpedo attack on its outward voyage from Naples on April 5 in the Mediterranean. The torpedo missed the ship by about ten feet, according to officers who filed the report after arriving in New York on May 1 from Naples and Palermo.
The total clearings for the month ending April 29 amounted to 1 475 414 dollars. For the corresponding month last year the amount was 904 567 dollars.
Official figures report grain destroyed in a Lake of the Woods fire on Saturday morning. Wheat losses reach 60 000 bushels, 19 600 bushels damaged, barley 8 000. The total value of feed and flour bags is about 100 000 dollars, with cleanup and recovery work planned and 175 workers expected to be employed.
Hon. B Mitchell announced that the question of extending the telephone line to Elkwater Lake has been reopened by the Department of Railways and Telephones. Inspection of the route is underway.
