Norway slips past Canada in world curling to spoil perfect run

Sjur Loen of Norway, 15, defeated Canada 5-4 in an extra end at Garmisch West Germany. The loss leaves Al Hackner’s Thunder Bay team 4-1 in round robin of the 10 nation championship while Norway rises to 2-3. Four teams will advance to the semifinals, with three playoff spots if the leader stays undefeated. Canada had earlier beaten the United States 8-4 and Sweden 11-4 in prior draws.

Costs split an Alsands oil project

Ottawa and Alberta consider up to a 50 percent government stake to rescue the Alsands mega project. Ottawa and Alberta would fund up to 8 million to keep the team intact for one month while negotiations with Shell Gulf and Petro-Canada continue. The partners demand a 20 percent return on the 13 billion project, and Nova Corp shows little interest.
