A rubbish fire sparked by wind damaged and destroyed six Suncrest Mobile Sales Ltd units on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway. Five show homes were affected. three were destroyed and three more damaged. Firefighters fought the blaze for about two hours amid 20 mph winds and water shortages.
In a packed Westlander Inn room 65 city landlords voted to form the Medicine Hat and District Landlord's Association. An interim board led by Lloyd Metcalf will govern as a constitution is drafted. Members approved a $5 donation to support initial operations and future membership fees.

Air Canada applied for fare increases on Europe and Caribbean routes. Subject to government approval, European fares rise May 1 to Oct 31 with First-class and 14 to 21 day excursions up eight percent, 22 to 45 days up five percent. Economy fares up $21 in between season and $22 in peak season. Youth and group inclusive tours up eight percent while APEX fares rise four to six percent by destination.
Ottawa reports the federal cabinet is reconsidering Crown corporation tax free status. Energy Minister Alastair Gillespie said questions were raised after Saskatchewan planned to take over up to half its potash industry. He warned provincial moves could deter foreign investors as opposition noted Crown ownership means no taxes.

Five bandits believed to be Americans robbed a Brink's security van outside a downtown Montreal bank loading $2.8 million in cash. The haul reportedly is the largest in Brink's history with no injuries and no shots fired. Investigators trace the weapon possibly sourced from the US.
Statistics Canada reports the January 1 population at 22,998,000, up 339,000 from a year earlier. The figure uses the 1971 census with adjustments for births deaths immigration and emigration since then.
