Berlin reports say leaders of three Socialist parties warned the government to respect the Bellifield convention and halt all Ruhr measures, giving a Thursday 3 PM deadline. If rejected, a general strike was hinted. troops advance noted as the Ruhr crisis widens.
London dispatch reports Premier Lloyd George telling the House of Commons that the government's Home Rule bill is the only plan that holds the field. He says Ireland would demand independence and an Irish Republic if asked what they want, highlighting the Irish question's complexity.
Seward Proc e President of the Bankers Trust Company, after returning from abroad, declared that Great Britain is now paying her way in international trade in an extraordinary way. He noted France bears a larger war burden and faced greater demoralization.
Frederick Francois Marshal told the chamber of deputies that France’s daily spending surged from 42 million francs in 1914 to 139 million francs in 1919. He cited 68 million in 1916 and 127 million in 1915 along with 2 million and 10 million figures for 1916 and 1917 respectively.
Ottawa reports a rise in total customs receipts to 184,805,079 for the fiscal year ending today, up from 156,471,702 last year. March shows an $8,300,481 year rise with total month receipts at 2,277,978 versus 12,907,498 a year ago.
In police court this morning Mary Laforandolu was committed for trial on a charge of stealing 700 dollars from Chas Prokofski an elderly man residing at 913 Fifth Street. Chris Birget was fined 10 dollars and costs for intoxication. Ray Trudeau of Detroit and Jos Nedeau of Ord lost their lives in a struggle with ice while crossing the Detroit River.
Dr Reid, minister of railways, laid the first annual budget of the Canadian National Railways before the house. The system reported an operating loss of 14 million dollars for the year, with 6.5 million on Canadian Northern and 7.5 million on IC R and Transcontinental. Fixed charges reached 19 million, while operating expenses rose from 84 to about 108 million due largely to McAdoo award wage increases. 75 cents of every dollar earned by government roads paid in wages. 1920 plans limit western branch line construction and halt Hudson Bay railway work.
In New York on March 31 the baby Jeanne Ousset weighed half a pound at birth and three quarters of a pound at seventeen days. She is a twin. her brother, who weighed three quarters of a pound at birth, died.
Joseph Wuest aged 48 of Elm Street was found unconscious at the Ogilvie Milling Co plant shortly after 3 am and died in a hospital at 9 45 am. A head injury is blamed though no witness saw the incident. An inquest is set for tomorrow. He leaves a wife and three children.
More than 100 armed men attacked the police barracks at Darrus seven miles southwest of Bantry County Cork with rifles and bombs last night. A portion of the building was blown up and two policemen were wounded seriously. After a hot fight the raiders driven off.
Tacoma Clearing House announced after banking hours that the Canadian exchange rate will drop from 15 percent to 10 percent today. The Alberta branch of the Dominion Carton and Printing Works of Vancouver will open in Edmonton next month.
The Associated Press reports in Washington on March 31 that English department stores are consolidating. Large stores in major cities absorb rivals and expand, including South America, as observers foresee market concentration under a few big interests while competition is not expected to vanish.
Ottawa March 29 The board of railway commissioners of Canada cancelled the order requiring a 10 percent fare increase on fares originating in Canada to United States points. A hearing will be held. The charge reflected United States payment obligations for cross border runs and the need to remit in US funds. The commission also cancelled raising the head tax for Canadians traveling to the United States from $8 to $9.

A general strike will begin Thursday across Denmark after King Christian and the new ministry rejected unions offer to compromise if the Reichstag is convened at once. The strike was declared by the trades union congress.

Washington March 1919 Cana dian Press reports several tariff readjustment bills before the U S House aim to tax wheat flour semolina and other wheat products raise duties on pulpwood printing paper magnesite coal tar and shell and pearl buttons. A measure by Rep Young calls for 25 cents per bushel on wheat and 1 32 5 per barrel on flour with ad valorem duties. another by Young proposes 10 cents per bushel and 45 cents per barrel plus 25 percent ad valorem on potatoes.
Detroit officials report the American Federation of Labor suspended the United Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees and Railway Shop Laborers for refusing to cede jurisdiction over certain members to the carpenters union. J. Grable, elected president after Allan E. Barker, declined to comment.
In London Mr Bonar Law stated in the House of Commons that warships had been offered to Canada and accepted. He added he had no details on Canadian demobilization plans for the naval service or on Esquimalt and Halifax dockyards, nor on the sale of Niobe and Rainbow or ship repair provisions.
London reports the Allied powers accepted Holland's note on guarding the former German emperor. The Dutch government on March 5 refused a second time to deliver Wilhelm for trial. The note to the British premier promised on the spot measures to minimize his liberty and prevent endangering world peace. Wilhelm would be closely guarded at Doorn with strict censorship.
Reports circulating claim William Sead Camp in Victoria British Columbia may become a Canadian base for repatriating Czecho-Slovak troops from Siberia. The plan would use Camp as a transit point where thousands of Chinese coolies have passed in recent years.
