Four Bowater unions dispute halting work, saying the company struggles to find willing labor. Local legislature certifies IWA members in the loggers dispute.
In Madagascar floods driven by a cyclone inundated towns near Tananarive. About fifty thousand people abandoned homes in low lying suburbs and sought refuge in schools and churches converted to relief centers. Premier Tsiranana called it a disaster unique in island history as military aircraft drop supplies and the government tightens food and fuel controls.
In Limassol 300 Cypriots clashed with about 100 British servicemen after a bar fight. British military police used tear gas to disperse the crowds and send troops back to bases. One injured Briton is the wife of a serviceman as Cyprus moves toward independence next February.
Three of six newborns from two triplet births in Montreal were reported thriving Sunday night. The Cardinal infants weigh one pound nine ounces and one pound three ounces, with a sister at two pounds two ounces who died. A Marchand baby group had one stillborn and one neonatal death. Earlier, two other triplet sets born March 14 were said to be fine in hospital.
A large early morning fire in Souris P E I destroyed a block of nine buildings including four homes and four businesses, leaving nine families homeless and one man hospitalized after being struck by a debris-filled drum. Nearby blocks suffered minor damage as flames lit the sky. total damage estimated at 150000 dollars. Police say several manslaughter charges will be laid after a White-Indian clash near Golden Lake injured Buckwald 27 and others. A car overturns near Eganville while Buckwald dies from head injuries sustained in the crash following the melee.
Douglas Gales, 5 weeks old, was found unconscious in a Birch Avenue lane near the Medicine Hat Steam Laundry by Frank Barber. Police seek the truck owner and any witnesses from about 11:20 am.
U S military leaders told Congress that the United States would be invincible in a full-scale war. Admiral Burke asserted a Soviet attack would be met with overwhelming American retaliation. General Taylor emphasized vast U S nuclear capacity and access to missiles and aircraft to strike major targets, including Thor missiles deployed in Britain. Nathan Twining noted air power could deliver most Soviet blows today.
In Prince Albert Saskatchewan Prime Minister Diefenbaker and Mrs Diefenbaker spent a quiet Easter Sunday away from Ottawa.
