Fire swept New York State Capitol causing extensive damage to the west wing and libraries. The blaze began in the Assembly library, burned for hours, obliterating priceless documents and threatening the entire building. Firefighters faced near escapes as officials watched the destruction unfold.
Montreal March 29 The Canada Medical Association will hold its Montreal meeting June 7 to 9 under Dr Geo W Armstrong. The gathering follows McGill University’s new medical building opening and brings many renowned physicians including Sir Thomas Barr and Dr William Mayo. Topics include a campaign against typhoid fever and reduced rail rates attract attendees.
New York report says a taxi driven by Thomas Madison was struck at the Thompson avenue crossing by an electric train. The cab wrecked and both occupants disappeared after Madison grabbed the woman passenger. Brooklyn police traced the taxi license 35468 to Nelat’s cabs as investigators pursued a mystery surrounding the vanished pair.
A Chicago resident claims Italian residents have contributed over 1 million dollars for the defense of Lugi and his Camorrists brothers on trial in Viterbo Italy. Ottawa March 28 Corporate interests opposed to reciprocity are strong in petitions filed with Sir Wilfrid Laurier. Forty nine petitions against reciprocity and thirty in favor reveal eastern factory employees’ concerns. Support includes the Canadian Club of Canadians in New York and a Lord Strathcona backed manifesto. Conservative leadership pressures mount as a caucus seeks order amid rumours of Montreal financial interests pushing Borden from the helm.
Chance Toronto reports W W Figgis of an Irish firm planning lace manufacture in Canada. Figgis, at the King Edward Hotel, travels west to Calgary before any decision. He declines to reveal the other interests beyond noting he is a director of a large firm producing Irish poplin and laces.
In Paris during an appeal today Lacour, jailed three years for assault on former Premier Briand, testified Bri an an adventurer as parts of Gamelots du Roi. other members caused disturbances and thirteen were arrested for contempt. Ottawa reports Mr. Borden abandons resignation plan, a Quebec faction seeking change routed and retreats.

The talk covers history of the 1909 act and 1910 amendments giving civic groups power to remove improperly cared for children, with emphasis on keeping children at home and curfew for street youths. The News Boy Act, backed by Chief Meiklejohn, requires licensed paper sellers to have parental and teacher signoffs.

Martin Wenner a Norwegian homesteader appeared in court with a swollen eye and pleaded guilty to drunkenness. He was fined three dollars and costs. Cornelius Homeot, another homesteader, was arrested after a disrobing stunt with Indian yells and also fined three dollars.

Mr. R. M. Alexander, manager of the Medicine Hat Grocery Co Limited, met A. P. Burns to start work on the warehouse immediately. The three storey brick building measures 80 by 110 feet and sits near the municipal storehouses. It will feature modern conveniences including electric elevators.
