Ontario and other provinces press Ottawa to consult before new programs as they back a shared agenda to fight youth unemployment. A $2.5 billion Millennium scholarship fund aims to aid 100,000 students with about $3,000 yearly starting 2000 while ministers set priorities to expand labor skills and remove social barriers to work.
Canadian customs issued a nationwide alert to look for ricin in seized powders. The advisory, shared by spokesperson Colette Gentes Hawn, warns officers to exercise extreme caution and notes ricin is highly toxic with no antidote. The warning originated from U S authorities and targets airport personnel.
Alberta Premier Ralph Klein announced he will not pursue the federal Tory leadership. He said he can do more for national unity by remaining premier of Alberta and strengthening ties with Quebec through a future alliance with Jean Charest. He rejected delaying the leadership race.
Health ministers faced sharp questions and protests during a Friday press conference on a 1.1 billion compensation package for hepatitis C tainted blood victims. Palliser Health Authority urged Alberta Health to sign a new contract with the Alberta Medical Association. The board called for recognizing aging population, more home care, and rural doctor demands. Doctors had withdrawn from committee work over funding and talks.
Fishmonger John Hogg faced a 2.5 metre long conger eel weighing about 68 kilograms that rose from the dead in his shop. He swatted at it with a broom, fled for 11 hours, and only returned when he was sure the monster lay still.
