Mary Churchill, youngest daughter of Britain’s prime minister, enjoys the Queen Charlotte debutantes ball while air raid warnings loom. The event, one of many London debuts canceled by the war, raises funds for hospital care for wives of service members.
At a general meeting of the Canadian Legion the club’s premises were approved for a thirty foot eastward extension. The executive was authorized to organize the expansion and five comrades were added to the advisory executive: W. F. Oates F. B. Connors J. Henderson C. Weigehell and G. Olsen. A Vimy Church parade to Fifth Avenue Church is set for Sunday April 6. The provincial convention will be in Calgary on June 9 16 and 17. New membership applications were approved. A resolution to Senator Meighen was sent to Ottawa with replies from the Prime Minister and M P F W Gershaw. Canon Cripps overseas sent a letter read at the meeting.
Navy Minister Macdonald confirmed two Danish ships were captured by the Royal Canadian Navy in West Indies waters adding about 16 000 tons to Canada’s mercantile marine force. The names of the vessels were not disclosed though reports cited a 571 ton Scandia and a 912?ton Christian Flolo as the captured tankers.
Group Captain G G Banting, senior staff member of the United Kingdom air mission to Canada, visited Medicine Hat yesterday and stopped at Station No 34 Service Flying Training School RAF. Local farmers expect field work to start within 16 days as moisture conditions improve from fall rains and melting snow. Prospects are optimistic due to favorable moisture and reduced wind along with three strong prior years boosting dry prairie lands.
On March 21 a successful program and bazaar was held at the North Cypress Private School. Ten pupils assisted by Florence and Rachel Good presented a patriotic program with Allen Waldbauer as Junior Red Cross chairman. Allie Waldbauer dressed as a Red Cross nurse and led the collection. Articles donated by pupils and parents were auctioned, raising 12.35 dollars. Olga Larson, the teacher, thanked helpers and the evening closed with the National Anthem and a Union Jack presentation.
Reports from Athens on March 28 say spontaneous street celebrations erupted after word of the overthrow of the Yugoslav government. No official comment was issued.
The Air Ministry News Service, citing RAF raids on Bremen, places civilian deaths at 1 000 with 7 000 injured. It adds Bremen lies on the Weser river and notes Hanover fatalities of 250 with 250 houses destroyed and 500 seriously damaged. The method of tallying casualties was not disclosed.
Cairo March 28 The Royal Air Force raided the Italian airfield at Calato Rhodes in the Eastern Mediterranean. The resulting smoke plume was reported visible up to 100 miles away by RAF headquarters today.
A 17 year old king in the Balkans amid a Yugoslav revolt against Axis alignment sharpens the threat of a two front war for Germany. Yugoslav forces, nearly a million strong, occupy strategic positions ready to resist invasion as Berlin welcomes Matsuoka and Yugoslavia joins the Axis. The crisis reshapes war prospects and may invite British pressure from North Africa.
South Alberta Regiment officers and officers of the air training school mess gathered for an informal evening. The program provided amusement and revealed notable talent among attendees.
Ottawa dispatch says the 29th official casualty list lists five missing and one dead from the Royal Canadian Navy, bringing total dead and missing to 302. It notes 19 more deaths from the H.M.C.S. Otter disaster off Canada’s east coast, raising the overall total to 821 with no Albertans among the latest losses.

Aberdeen Pharmacy installs a soda fountain. A local shopper notes Jimmy Henderson busy at the market this morning. Eggs candied and weighed over one hundred dozen. Prices 20 and 15 cents on the market square. Next Tuesday, April 1, warns readers to stay on guard as robins arrive.
Work progresses rapidly on a new theatre to be built by Adolph Dederer on Third Street beside the Assiniboia hotel. When opened in several weeks it will seat over 400 patrons with a semi balcony. A neon marquee, modern interior, spacious lobby, ladies room and handsome auditorium are planned. Sound, screen and projector equipment will be the best available in Canada. The theatre name has not yet been decided.
President Roevelt chose a radio address from sea aboard the yacht Potomac instead of delivering a live speech to Jackson Day dinner celebrants in Washington. He is cruising in southern waters aboard the Potomac.
In Red Deer Alta Catherine Kroeker ten was playing with friends when a bulldog attacked. Ace a black Labrador owned by Mr and Mrs Paul Redman charged the bulldog distracting it from the child. Catherine was injured and is recovering in hospital with shock and cuts.
Edmonton March 28 A suggestion from the United Farmers of Alberta asks the Dominion government through the Wheat Board to take over the entire wheat crop of 1941 42 excluding feed and seed needs for farms. The proposal calls for an equitable price based on average production costs and the cost of machinery and goods.
Britain reports total civilian dead 38,859 and personal injuries 40,166 since the war began. The figures were disclosed in Newcastle by Harm Wilkinson, joint parliamentary secretary to the Ministry of Home Security. She noted military air raid fatalities are about one fiftieth of the total.
Cairo march 28 British troops pursue retreating Italian forces toward Asmara after capturing Cheren the key mountain town. A large share of the 35 000 fascist defenders may have been taken, with remnants heading toward Asmara and possibly Massaua. In Ethiopia the British seize Harar as the East African front shifts in their favor.
British bomber command pounded the German industrial centers of Cologne and Düsseldorf with heavy bombs in raids from the Rhineland to Dunkirk and La Brittany coast. Fires and rail yard destruction were reported at Cologne and Düsseldorf. Three British planes went missing. a German bomber was shot down near Beachy Head. London saw its first alarms since March 20 as intruding German planes turned back.
After three years of debate in the Alberta legislature and on the hustings opposition and government members agreed on terms for possibly returning a $200 deposit from the Okotoks High River recall petition. The assembly urged the executive council to consider refund if petition forms are returned within 30 days. otherwise the deposit is forfeited.
The 1916 report notes Austrians launching a strong offensive against Italians in the Gorizia sector. French forces repelled renewed German attacks at Haucourt and Malancourt in Verdun. Allied warships blockaded Crete’s coast.
The admiralty reported that the British submarine Parthian torpedoed two enemy ships in a convoy south of Italy. A 6,000-ton supply or troop ship and a 10,000-ton tanker were torpedoed in the attack reported today in London.
