Highways Minister Taylor said survey parties are gathering information on all possible routes for the Trans-Canada highway west of Calgary. A full engineering study will precede any Ottawa recommendation. No commitment to present or alternative routes has been made. If a route through Cochrane is avoided or the present path chosen, Cochrane hill will be improved or remain part of the network.
In SMILEY Saskatchewan the town named for founder Ernest Smiley surges from drought decline to a new oil boom. Since oil discovery last Sept 17 the population jumped from 100 to 400, with new pumps, roads, two filling stations, theatre and other facilities expanding rapidly.
Prime Minister St Laurent outlined a live and let live approach to Communist China in the Commons while not ruling out recognition in the future. Diefenbaker and Coldwell weighed in with cautions and support for or against recognizing Beijing, as Canada weighs peace, security, and Geneva talks.

EDMONTON CP Alberta motorists receive a 10 day extension to April 10 for buying 1954 passenger car licence plates. The March 31 deadline is now extended. Deputy Provincial Secretary E R Hughes announced police will stop cars bearing old plates after April 10.
Defence Minister Claxton says Ottawa and Washington have quietly pursued North American air defence against a potential bomber attack. Joint research includes the McGill Fence radar project from McGill University in Montreal, but no method guarantees interception of every attacking aircraft.

Their combined ticket named Lucky Seven and could win up to 20000 apiece if Alberoni wins. A mix up left their number not matching the winning WT-25837 ticket held by seven printers of the Lethbridge Herald.
Emily Lust was arrested after a threat letter to Fred Seitz and a shotgun incident at the Seitz home. He appeared in City Police Court, elected trial by higher court, and was remanded for a preliminary hearing March 31 with bail set at 5000 dollars on own recognizance and two 2500 dollar sureties.
Calgary architect Peter L Rule told the provisional planning board that levelling off in material and construction costs allows a 200 bed municipal district hospital for about 1.85 to 1.9 million dollars. The project plans were approved pending provincial health department review with a ratepayers vote likely around May 19.
Maurice Knowles, a local business man, suffered a broken leg near the hip joint when his hand touched a hot wire while on a ladder at Southalia Building Supply Ltd. The shock and fall caused serious injury but he was not burned. An electrician from B.C. will handle the electrical work during his recovery.

Expenditures total about 156.95 million with 48 million in net statutory payments, as two bills on the school act and labor code loom for debate.
