Thatcher case reveals escape help offered from Edmonton prison
Former Saskatchewan minister Colin Thatcher was accused of receiving offers of help to escape from an Edmonton institution during a murder trial. Witness Calvin Smoker described plans allegedly from Gingras to mastermind Thatcher’s escape, with Brinks robbers also expressed willingness to pay for a getaway. Smoker testified Gingras killed Vital Piquette and joked about it. Thatcher sits in prison serving a life sentence with no parole for 25 years for the murder of his former wife JoAnn Wilson in 1983.
