In Parliament, a pair of Gardiner and Enler backed bills seek a new grain support system and regulated futures trading. The first resolution proposes a percentage deduction on marketed grain to fund acreage payments up to 32 an acre, tied to land under cultivation and township wheat yields. The second resolution promotes cooperative wheat marketing.
At the chamber of commerce monthly meeting Eugene Burton and James Mitchell praised the Ottawa delegation for advancing the Redcliff-Ronalane irrigation scheme. A. P. Burns and F. W. Gershaw urged continued pressure on government while noting CPR and P.F.R.A. engineers supported feasibility. Burn s predicted timely results and discussed land titles and leasing with government officials.
A foreign dispatch cites Madrid officials planning surrender negotiations to cease resistance in the capital. The report notes talks involve the Nationalist faction and a potential handover of Madrid district, with terms including recognition of Francoist leadership and disbandment of Republican forces.
Today around one o clock the river went out as ice swelled from bank to bank. Cracks spread over the surface and immense ice flocs, weakened by warmth, were hurled about fifteen feet before sliding harmlessly past bridge piers while moving downstream.
A cool air mass is moving in and is forecast to lower the high summer temperatures seen in recent days. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons the thermometer reached about 70, with nighttime lows not dropping below frost. Last night’s low was 39 and the night before 37, while today at noon the reading was 62.
EDMONTON March 23 CP The Alberta Legislature discussed high costs of farm implements and repairs. A resolution moved by J A Wingblade urged government inquiry into excessive and inequitable prices, with calls for currency and credit stabilization to aid farmers.
In Columbia six white convicts were executed in the state penitentiary electric chair for killing prison guard captain J. Olin Sanders during a December 12, 1937 escape attempt. The executions occurred in 48 minutes.
London report says Britain hesitates on applying its new collective security policy and on introducing conscription to support future military commitments. Poland and France reportedly back conscription. Sir John Simon warned he would resign if it were adopted, a nod to wartime precedent.
Premier Aberhart announces an administrator and investigation into the Eastern Irrigation District. George Robertson is named administrator and official trustee until the probe ends and a board is elected. J L Grey resigns as manager. L C Charlesworth named successor. Approval required from the Irrigation Council. Continued on page five.
The Royal visit committee moves to enlarge plans for May 26 crowds. It considers feeding arrangements with church aid and open air booths, safety controls, a Big Sandy band for the jamboree, Riverside park gathering, and a provincial grant request.
In a busy session the Alberta Legislature moved twenty three bills to third reading including a cancer commission measure and amendments to the Hail Insurance Act and federal municipal loan enabling law. The house adjourned until tomorrow after extensive committee study on the marketing act and by elections timing was debated.
At the monthly Legion meeting it was decided to hold a Vimy church parade on Sunday April 9 at Fifth Ave United Church with services led by Rev J W Bainbridge and Rev J F Butcher. Delegates were named for the Provincial Command meeting in Edmonton May 31 to June 3. An election will be held at the next meeting to fill a vacancy on the executive as several new members were welcomed.
Rev W D Grant Hollingsworth spoke on Canadians and National Unity before a large Canadian Club gathering. He warned that a pauper spirit leads to a poorhouse, while vision and cooperation build a prosperous nation. W S Ashley lauded the talk as timely and thought provoking. Lou Monkley presided as chairman.
