Belfast Raid Ends In Seven Slain In Double Tragedy
A raid on the Belfast home of Gwen McMahon, a saloon keeper, left seven members of the family shot, four died at the hospital and three others critically wounded. The attackers wore uniforms, forced entry at midnight, and fled after firing on the sleeping household. Police and ambulance crews faced a grisly scene as victims were carried away. In Dublin, Sinn Fein leader Eamon de Valera ordered an urgent meeting over continued Catholic killings in Northeast Ulster. Three more men, Frank Kelly, Edward McLoughlin, and William Cassidy, were found shot on the Fermannelagh Tyrone border in possible reprisal for recent unrest.
