Willy Brandt quits as chairman of West Germany's Social Democrats after internal uproar over appointing Greek outsider Margarita Mathiopoulos as chief spokesman. Mathiopoulos withdrew her candidacy hours before Brandt's resignation.
Transport Minister John Plohman condemned CN Rails proposal to cut grain freight rates to 46 Prairie communities. He warned it would force farmers to haul farther, worsen rural road wear, and hasten the decline of towns not benefiting from lower charges.
